- Roger Bamber 'Modern Music' Cover PhotographerIn William's World·14 September 2022I received the news of the recent passing of the Brighton based photographer Roger Bamber at the age of 78. I knew Roger through his interest in steam railways, but eventually realised from seeing his name credited that he took the photographs for the cover of the Be Bop Deluxe album 'Modern Music'. In discussions with him about this photoshoot, he seemed to recall he was called in at short notice to complete the shoot somewhere on the Kings Road and in the early hours of the morning. Does Bill have any recollection of this? I had recently contacted him to suggest he purchase a copy of the 'Modern Music' boxed set as there were many new images from the album and that he also purchases the recent Mojo magazine with the article on Bill, as the article included the album cover. Roger had a distinguished career as a Fleet Street and freelance photographer and has a portfolio containing images of other music icons. There was a selection of his photographs published in 'The Guardian' newspaper on Tuesday 13th September and further images can be found on 'The Guardian' website by locating Roger Bamber - A life in Pictures.43228
- Futurama, the making of...In William's World·1 January 2023Ok, I'm not posting anything new here and I would imagine almost every forum member has probably seen this interview. However, for anyone that hasn't and any people new to Bill's overall work, past and present, then this interview with Bill Nelson and Mark Powell of Esoteric Recordings/Cherry Red, is a cracker! It's a brilliant interview all round, great structure and good questions and an absolute pleasure to see Bill reminisce those events/times, and colour in the picture. There's no 'awkwardness', due mainly to Mark Powell knowing his stuff, and Bill ofc, which obviously puts Bill at ease from the off, resulting in a wonderfully relaxed and insightful interview = great stuff!😎 It's Bill Nelson weekend again at our house, on the music front and were playing a mixed bag, old and new. I picked out Futurama, as one of the 'oldies', as it was the first Be-Bop album I bought back in 1975, as a 15 year old, which blew my socks off at the time and made me an instant, and indeed lifelong, fan and really opened my eyes to music. I continue to this very day, with a similar excitement and enthusiasm I had back then, buying and listening to new Bill Nelson recordings, as I would imagine most of us do here, and long may it continue. Anyway, I watched this YT video again, a little after midnight and thoroughly enjoyed it. I could listen to Bill reminisce like this, all night long...magic!43333
- Non-LP tracks circa Red Noise > ChimeraIn William's World13 July 2024Would it possibly be appropriate to bracket Indiscretion, Dancing on a Knife's Edge, Contemplation, and Time Tracking apart, because they were recorded at the same time for a Kid Jensen session on BBC Radio 1? I think they were post Love That Whirls and pre Chimera (and what a brilliant session that was - those recordings still sound as fresh as when they were first broadcast). PS Great work TKK!43
- Non-LP tracks circa Red Noise > ChimeraIn William's World13 July 2024Yes, this is great work, TKK. Thank you for it. Agreeing with Ed's comment and expanding on it, to integrate all the various radio sessions into your list (see separate thread about the sessions) would be useful because the sessions all come with recording or broadcast dates and show what Bill's current ongoing work was at the time he paused to do a session for radio. With the exception, I think, of Contemplation, Bill rarely returned to a song long after first recording it - he's always moving onwards! - so radio session dates are probably within days or weeks of any first home recording dates. We're close to having a 1979-1984 (85?) timeline for known songs of that period. And what an exciting, experimental time that was! Dropping into that timeline such items as dates of UK and US tours would be a bonus as well. Thanks again for getting this far.43

- Axe Victim’s 50thIn William's World19 May 2024I am currently reviewing the release dates for the Discography section on here (although I have much work yet to do) but my research on Axe Victim says that it arrived on 7 June 1974 the same date that Jet Silver and the Dolls was released on 7". The evidence for this is a news piece from Record Mirror. Most records in the UK back then were released on Fridays so to me that almost certainly rules out 17th (a Monday). I hope that helps.43
- Chimes & RingsIn William's World9 June 2023Chimes and Rings - it's back! As a dig-it-all download! We all have our personal favourites, and this album is one of mine. 'Demonstrations' arrived when I was at a bit of a crossroads in my life and I instantly took it to my heart. Inevitably it's dark in places, being as it is an outpouring of Bill's feelings during a tough time for him, but there are many moments of lightness and fun. The rock rocks, and you can definitely play 'spot the riff' as Bill nods back to his guitar hero days (eg, Dangerous Lady), but it's also super funky, and some of my favourite tracks are ones with little or no guitar (eg, I Wait For You - which is as bright and breezy a demonstration of Bill's mastery of drum programming as you could wish to hear). It must have come out a few months before the first time I saw Bill play live (at an arts festival in Wakefield in 1990) because I took it up there with me in the hope of getting Bill to sign it. I went to Clarence Park early on that day, just to suss out the lie of the land, and Bill was there, about to set up. I grabbed the opportunity to speak to him, and got him to sign my Chimes and Rings cd - while I held his umbrella! Happy memories... Anyway, I've just picked out the cd to give it a spin (it still sounds great, obvs), and taken a look at Bill's signature, and I see that he signed it on this date - 9th June! Spooky! So if you've never heard Chimes and Rings, I heartily recommend it as a slice of Bill in perfect pop/rock mode.43

- SO MANY ALBUMS, SO LITTLE TIME...In William's World·26 April 2019Will be mastering 'Stand By: Light Coming...' next month, and hopefully its companion piece 'The Last Lamplighter' too, but I'm also trying to make a decision on which of the older, unreleased albums to try and get out around a similar time. One album that has already been sequenced and just needs mastering and artwork is 'Amplified Dreams And Wild Surprises.' This is a definite contender but, as it is a double album and will therefore take longer to transfer to Fairview Studio's mastering computer (and require more artwork for its packaging,) its release will have to be at least a couple of months behind the release of 'Stand By: Light Coming...' I find it frustrating, having so much music recorded and waiting for release but the physical side of manufacturing and packaging can't be achieved instantly, it's a slow process and I have to be patient. I remember saying, in an interview in the 1970s, that albums should be released as frequently as magazines, i.e.: one per month. In musical terms, I'd still find that an exciting way to work but, in practical terms, there are so many barriers to the process. I can but try... A flyer for 'Amplified Dreams And Wild Surprises' which I'm hoping to get released this summer...43380
- Bill on FB - artists as antennaeIn World Outside The Window·1 February 2025New comment from Bill Nelson on his Facebook page: 'I know this is said often, but my generation was so fortunate, so privileged, to grow up in an age when some of the greatest creative, cultural shifts in art and society were taking place. We were so lucky. Now we endure, in our twilight years, the dumbing down of virtually everything, a new dark age where Americans vote for an ignorant bigot and the world descends into hatred , warmongering and chaos. Such sad times. But things will change, a new voice will arise, a new direction will come, and a new generation, not yet born , will pick up the torch and shift the balance back to a better direction. It will take time, but it will happen. Keep the faith!' (https://www.facebook.com/bill.nelson.54943600) I always appreciate it when Bill takes the time to comment on wider (political/social) issues. Several years ago, I think he called it exactly right on Brexit, Boris Johnson, Trump, Liz Truss, etc. And before that (2010) he predicted correctly on the coalition between David Cameron's Conservatives and Nick Clegg's Liberal Democrat's. At the time nobody knew how that would turn out - some were optimistic, others pessimistic. To Paraphrase Bill's comments from back then, he said he thought they (Cameron and Clegg) would end up being universally reviled. Pretty good prediction (long before Brexit and David Cameron's role in it were known)! McLuhan (or Ezra Pound - I can't remember which, perhaps both) once said artists were "antennae of the race", early alarm systems. And we see great artists such as Bill as ahead of their time in many ways. (Btw, he recommended David Lynch's Eraserhead long before Lynch was well known, and he recommended Robert Anton Wilson way before Wilson established his reputation as important counterculture author, etc... there are many examples like this that I can think of, where his early recommendations of something turned out to be gold). Good to see most of the comments on FB in positive agreement with Bill on his remarks. Another day, another ray of hope!43249

- New Vibrato Wonderland - Pre-order NOW!In William's World19 November 2020Good points made by Pete and Jon...Looking back a couple of years or so, I was pretty set in my ways re. buying music, in that it had to be a CD (or vinyl), mainly CD, and I 'told myself' I didn't like downloads, period...Of course, eventually I took the plunge and fast forward to now, actually being able to legitimately buy and download your favourite albums and music is really great. As mentioned, takes up no physical space at home, very good quality, convenient and quick, sync across your devices. etc, etc..(and you can always burn a CD if you want.). I will still buy CDs, but I now recognise and acknowledge the merits of downloads, and to be quite honest, have no major preference over format, especially if artwork is available in the download package.43

- Nelsonic StarlinerIn William's World·28 March 2019Do any of you have information on the Nelsonic Starliner LP which I understand was designed by and produced by Bill Nelson. The info I have says they were a better build at a more cost friendly price than the Gibson and I couldn't agree more. Gibson sued and shut the production down. I am the proud owner of one that I play daily. Any info would be greatly appreciated.111720

- Random ObservationsIn World Outside The Window9 February 2023I've always been amazed at how much Bill interacts with his fans. Most other websites I visit have little or no interaction with the artist. Other than the occasional announcement of a new album, every few years or so. But, that's just my personal experience. I try to interact more on Dreamsville but I'm basically not that interesting, so I'm not sure it helps much. And, as I get older, I seem to have less to say. I do appreciate Bill, his team and all the Nelsonians who keep this all going. Cheers. 🙂2
- Steve Jones, great interview..In World Outside The Window·11 November 2024Steve Jones of Sex Pistols speaks to Gary Kemp and Guy Pratt | IN FULL | ...sometimes, these two can be a little, shall we say, annoying, interrupting their guests a good example, but they handle this Jonesy interview really well...Thoroughly enjoyable, so if you are a Steve Jones fan like me (big fan), it's well worth a watch...and, a nice couple of references to Steve's Nottingham connection, which I found cool as a Nottingham lad.
