- JON HASSELL.In William's World·28 June 2021It was with great sadness that I learned of the death of musician Jon Hassell this morning. He was a very special and unique artist. A contemporary of Harold Budd, Jon created some wonderfully haunting and beautiful music. I first discovered his music in the early 1980s whilst browsing in a record store in Greenwich Village in New York. I pulled out an album titled 'Eros In Arabia', the title immediately appealed of course but I had no idea what music it might contain or who Jon Hassell was. I decided to buy it. Back home in England I placed the record on my turntable for the first time and was absolutely entranced. I've bought several of Jon's albums since and they're all marvellous works of art. With the passing of Jon Hassell and, last year, Harold Budd, the world is a poorer place. 🙁913539

- JEFF BECK: A PERSONAL TRIBUTE FROM BILL.In William's World·12 January 2023It was with profound sadness and deep shock that I heard of the death of Jeff Beck this morning on BBC news. It’s hard to take in that we will no longer hear his fabulous playing beam out from the stages of the world. Such a sad loss... I met Jeff briefly backstage at the Classic Rock magazine’s awards ceremony a few years ago. When introduced to him I was nervous and unsure what to say. I said that I just wanted to thank him for raising the bar so high for those of us who played the guitar. His answer was, “Oh, it was easy.” Last year I went to his concert in York, the VIP tickets being a generous gift from the Nelsonica team. He performed with Johnny Depp who sang on several numbers but the stand out moment for me was when Jeff played an old Link Ray number titled ‘Rumble.’ It’s an essentially simple instrumental, based on a two chord riff, but Jeff played it perfectly with a raw, in-your-face sound. Jeff always had the best musicians around him as band members. Drummer Steve Alexander, who played with me in the Gentleman Rocketeers at a past live Nelsonica event, had toured with Jeff and told me how Jeff liked to playfully insert the ‘Woody Woodpecker’ theme into the occasional solo. So, as a tribute to both Steve and Jeff, I did the same onstage that day, producing a big grin on Steve’s face. I became aware of Jeff back in the 1960s, when he was a member of The Yardbirds and I remember watching him play ‘Shapes Of Things’ with them when they appeared on television’s ‘Ready, Steady, Go’ program. Jeff wore a fringed buckskin jacket and when his solo came up he dropped to his knees, placed his Telecaster upright on the floor of the stage and played the song’s wonderful, Indian inspired solo with the aid of a Tone Bender fuzzbox. It was a magical, transformative moment. |I've never forgotten it. Around that time, on an art school trip to London , I went to a music shop at the base of the then new Centre Point building and bought myself a Tone Bender. I have a copy of the ‘Rock n’ Roll Party’ DVD which documents the performance Jeff gave at The Iridium Club in New York, a concert Jeff did as a tribute to the late Led Paul. Jeff played some of Les’ old tunes superbly, plus versions of ‘Sleepwalk’ and ‘Apache.’ It seems our roots in guitar were very, very similar. Jeff was , without doubt, the guitarist’s guitarist. His tone and technique were uniquely his own. He had an instantly recognisable sonic signature. and an ability to use the whammy bar in subtle and melodic ways. He could play as nasty as anyone could want, and as tenderly and sweetly as an angel. Jeff’s impact on the electric guitar is impossible to overstate. He was an inspirational giant. My heartfelt condolences to his wife Sandra. He will be missed profoundly. Bill Nelson. January 12th, 2023.129956

- AfghanistanIn World Outside The Window·15 August 2021I don't post on this forum very often. In fact only once before, when I thought that certain forum members were being disrespectful to the late Prince Phillip. Well the situation in Afghanistan is becoming very alarming now and I just hope that all of the people from the UK manage to escape in time. I 'm aware that many Americans are on this forum, some supporters of President Biden. Have you any positive thoughts on his recent actions? Thank you230349

- "Two-Fold Aspect of Everything" download: Remastered? In William's World·19 January 2025Hey all, does anyone know if the new "Two-Fold Aspect of Everything" download has been remastered? Quite a lot of this collection will be included in the upcoming "Quit Dreaming" boxset, so I'm wondering if the files used here are from that set, and if the remaining material, which I imagine will be coming out on a future "Love That Whirls" reissue, has been also remastered in anticipation of that release. Thanks all. It was nice to see it up there, with "Acceleration" and "Hard Facts" restored to their proper place.211375

- RED NOISE BOX SET CHARTS...In William's World·7 September 2022It may surprise you, (it certainly surprised me,) to learn that the Red Noise box set has hit the number 10 spot in the official independent chart and number 6 in another. Cherry Red informed me of this the other day but I only now got around to posting the news here. I find it ironic that it's taken 40 years.for the recordings to be given the attention that they are due. Maybe in another 40 years my more current recordings will be given similar rewards. 😉 ihttps://www.officialcharts.com/charts/independent-albums-chart/ It is also No 6 in the Indie Breakers Chart - https://www.officialcharts.com/charts/independent-albums-breakers-chart/137697
- John Cooper-Clarke and BillIn William's World·14 February 2021Currently listening to JCC reading his autobiography "I Wanna Be Yours" -- all 15 hours of it! It's wonderful, by turns hilarious and moving, and always interesting. It was a happy surprise to hear (in Chapter 47!) about his experiences being the opening act for Be Bop Deluxe on tour in 1978. John speaks highly of Bill. (If you're interested in hearing John read his amazing book in his unique style, you can get a free 1-month Audible tryout, as I am doing!) best wishes to all Toby3261293

- ELLIOT NELSON FIRST SOLO ALBUM COMING AUGUST 7th.In William's World·31 July 2020Some of you may know that I'm blessed with some very talented offspring. I'm thrilled to announce that my son, Elliot Nelson, will be releasing his first solo album on Bandcamp on Friday the 7th of August. Titled 'As He Now Appears' the album is a sometimes dark and brooding atmospheric instrumental piece with Elliot playing all the instruments himself. The album contains 11 tracks and was mastered at Fairview by John Spence,(who masters my own albums.) The album also features artwork by my daughter Elle Nelson. The album can be pre-ordered from Bandcamp and you can hear samples from a couple of tracks by using this link. And here is Elliot's Facebook page: Those of you who enjoy the more 'left field,' ambient, avant, experimental style of music will, I think, really like this album. Check it out and help support a fellow traveller in sound. 😉714858
