  • The Alchemical Adventures Of Sailor Bill

'The Alchemical Adventures Of Sailor Bill' is one of my favourite albums and one which I'm very proud of. It evokes the coast of my childhood and teenage years when I spent holidays with my parents in places such as Reighton Gap, Skipsea, Withernsea, Bridlington, Blackpool, Ilfracombe and Spurn Head. The album contains a mix of vocal and instrumental pieces, richly textured guitars and accompaniment by 'The Lighthouse Signal Mechanism Orchestra.' If you've not yet heard this album, it is available as a digital download from my Bandcamp page.

  • A New LIVE Album!

Coming, (possibly late August this year), a live album: 'Tripping The Light Fantastic' documents the live performance I gave as part of the 'New Northern Dream' launch party last October. Recorded at 'The Clothworker's Hall at Leeds University, the album will contain the entire solo instrumental performance as it happened. More news in a few weeks.

  • Songs For Ghosts Music Completed

28 new songs now completed for the 'SONGS FOR GHOSTS' double album which is planned for release at a special launch party event on October 28th. Those attending will receive an advance, signed copy of the album prior to its more general release in November. I now have to work on the track sequencing over the 2 discs...a time consuming task to get it right, especially with that amount of material to sift through. Then the next step will be to come up with images to use on the packaging. Lots to think about.

  • The Ventures In Space

What seems like an eternity ago...and yet like only yesterday, I bought this album way back in the 1960s. 'The Ventures In Space.' With cover art that hardly matched the sci-fi title and yet spoke of the optimistic times and the hope of a bright future, I fell for the image's romance. Hot Rods and Custom Cars like the one in the cover photo' were a great passion of mine as a teenager. I built many an imported plastic model kit, (made by companies such as Aurora, Monogram and AMT), of various custom cars designed by the likes of George Barris and Ed Roth, exotic automotive fantasies, beyond the reach of mundane, post-war British austerity, yet adored by those who, like myself, were seduced by the glamour of American pop-culture. The music on the album wasn't quite as good as the Ventures' earlier recordings, (like 'Walk Don't Run' or 'Ram-Bunk-Shush'), all of which helped fire up my earliest guitar dreams, but it was, nevertheless, cool enough. I think I may still have the original vinyl that I bought all those long years ago.

  • Merle Travis

Astonishing that Merle Travis doesn't quite get the kudos he deserves. A man who influenced Chet Atkins profoundly, here he is playing 'Cannonball Rag.' (Note that he's only using his thumb and one finger to pick the tune). Quite amazing!

  • Mikka Vainio

Only just now learned of the death of Mikka Vainio of the minimalist synth duo 'Pansonic.' I'm extremely shocked and saddened by this tragic news. I met Mikka a couple of times a number of years ago, and exchanged the occasional email with him. When we first met I was surprised and flattered to learn that he was a fan of my own music and wanted to collaborate on something. Somehow, I always seemed to be pre-occupied with my own work and the collaboration never happened, much to my regret now. Mikka was a lovely, charming man and I liked his personality immensely. So very, very sorry to hear of his passing. Rest in peace.

  • CD Stock STILL Available

Have been taking stock of my CD albums to see which ones are still available from my Dreamsville site's mail order facility. I have found several that are in fairly low numbers and destined to become unobtainable. So, as many of my fans may have missed some of these, I'm going to put together a few flyers to post here to alert you to some of my personal favourites. This first one is for an album called 'FANTASMATRON' which was released in 2011. It's a quirky vocal album containing 14 tracks. Available as a mail order CD only from my website. And another advert variation... And here is another, still available, album from the sale section of my Dreamsville Store. One of my personal favourites, something I'm really proud of. It's a lovely pastoral instrumental album, (with one vocal track,) and on sale at just £5. Here's another £5 bargain CD available from the Dreamsville Department Store. This is a flyer for 'Modern Moods For Mighty Atoms.' (Not the actual cover.)

  • Ings Road School - Sad Demolition

This photograph shows Ings Road School in Wakefield in the first stages of its demolition. (The site now occupied by a large retail park.) I was a pupil at Ings Road School in the late 1950s/early '60s. The central area of the building, (with the little bell tower on top,) was the school hall which had a stage at the back of it. It was on that stage that I gave my first performance as a guitarist at the school's Christmas concert when I was a pupil there. The blocks with windows extending out from the sides and front of the hall were the actual classrooms. On the left, by that white sign, is the girls entrance and cloakroom. The boys entrance is on the opposite side of the building, along with the boys cloakroom. Though boys and girls had separate entrances and cloakrooms, the classes were not segregated by gender. At the back, to the left of the tall chimney, you can see the gymnasium block, which was built in the 'sixties. Prior to that, physical training, (P.T) was done in the central hall. I disliked PT intensely, and even more so when they built the gym. But, whilst I was not a favourite pupil of the PT teachers, I got on well with the English, Art, Music, and Science teachers. Woodwork too, where I tried to build my own electric guitar. The music teacher was a Miss Kirkham who encouraged me to bring my guitar to school to play for the music class. The Art teacher was a Miss Cooper who thought I should go to Art School and arranged for me to take the required examination. Mr Smithson was the English master who was also a fan of jazz. He lent me some of his albums including one by Django Reinhardt, which was my first exposure to the legendary guitarist. He also ran a school photography club of which I was a member. (Once won a little trophy/shield from the club which I was rather proud of.) The other photo is of myself when I was a pupil there, not long before leaving for art college.

  • Questions for Hank

In the latest issue of the UK's 'GUITAR MAGAZINE', you can read a big article on guitarist Hank Marvin of The Shadows where several well known guitarists ask Hank questions about his illustrious career. I'm featured alongside players such as Brian May and Phil Manzanera who were inspired by Hank in the early '60s. The list of questions put to Hank is interesting, and I think you'll find you'll find own my question of interest too!

  • CD Launch Party!
