- AI...just how concerned should we be?In World Outside The Window11 September 2022My concern regarding AI is not that it will become truly sentient and wipe us out. It's unlikely to happen in our lifetime for several reasons. No, my concern in the short to medium-term is corporations using ever more sophisticated AI to largely replace the human workforce. It's already underway. This means we're going to need a system very like Universal Basic Income, and higher corporation taxes to pay for it. Attitudes about 'working for a living' and defining our status and worth by our occupation will have to change. And that's going to be a massive social problem. Imagine it.32
- Astro-boyIn World Outside The Window13 May 2022Thanks for the replies guys...No, I'm not trying to contact astro, or anyone from the old forum, personally. I do miss quite a lot of the old crew who used to post regularly on the old site and the general banter it used to generate (ups and downs) and I think there was much more of a community spirit back then and so, to that extent, I do miss it...Maybe when I made the post above, I was feeling a little nostalgic/wistful/reflective. I'm sure anyone who used to be a regular and wanted to pick up the thread again on the new forum, would do so, so it's best left at that really...But I was just sending out a few nice positive vibes, in the hope that J and one or two of the old crew might just receive them...Anyway, thanks for the input and advice/ideas, much appreciated and nice to see some 'old faces' again!32

- Your Favourite Promo Music Vid'sIn World Outside The Window19 March 2024It's incredibly unfashionable to admit this, but I really liked some of Adam & the Ant's videos. I was on the cusp of becoming a teenager, and I loved the Technicolor high camp insanity in the midst of so much po-faced gloom, or aspirational cod-chic, of the times. I loved the fact that no other artist would have had Diana Dors or Dandy Nichols or Benny Hill associated with their 'brand'. Mr Ant wasn't being ironic, of course, which is what made it. But aside from that, I like this video a lot. When it was made, back in the 80s, it apparently cost an absolute fortunate. It didn't have the desired commercial impact, but probably prompted some nightmares.32

- Bill in Space! In William's World·19 March 2021Biden expected to nominate former Sen. Bill Nelson to be NASA administrator March 18, 2021 at 11:10 am Updated March 18, 2021 at 11:12 am By Christian Davenport The Washington Post WASHINGTON — The Biden administration is expected to nominate former U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson to be the next administrator of NASA, according to multiple people with knowledge of the matter. If approved by the Senate, Nelson would be the second consecutive NASA chief to come from Congress and would give NASA a leader with close ties to the Oval Office. Nelson, 78, was a key Biden supporter during the campaign and has a long personal relationship with the president. The announcement could come as early as Friday, according to the people briefed on the matter who were not authorized to speak publicly ahead of the official announcement. Nelson flew to space on the space shuttle in 1986 and oversaw NASA’s space programs while in Congress. He is knowledgeable and enthusiastic about space and NASA, an agency he has long cherished. But the choice is disappointing to many who were hopeful the next NASA administrator would be the first woman to serve in the top position. Nelson, a Democrat from Florida, has long been an advocate for space — a rarity among members of Congress. NASA and its contractors have long been an important source of jobs in Florida, where the Kennedy Space Center is located. Huge crowds have flocked to the state for decades to watch launches. While in the Senate, Nelson was a staunch supporter of NASA’s Space Launch System, the troubled heavy-lift rocket that Congress mandated after the Obama administration canceled a previous rocket and spacecraft program, called Constellation, that was way over budget and behind schedule. Like its predecessor, the SLS rocket is years behind schedule and over budget and has yet to fly. That stance has made proponents of the commercialization of space wary at a time when NASA has embraced the expanding capabilities of the private sector. NASA relies on SpaceX, for example, to fly its astronauts to and from the International Space Station under NASA’s “commercial crew” program and is looking to the private sector to help in its quest to return to the moon. While Nelson is a well-known champion for NASA, many were hoping for a new generation of leadership to carry the agency into a new era. “It’s time for a female administrator,” Wayne Hale, a former NASA space shuttle program manager who was the flight director for 40 missions, wrote on Twitter. “Plenty of qualified candidates.” But since then the commercial sector has gone a long way toward changing the minds of officials who were once skeptical, and people close to Nelson have said he is enthusiastic about the promise of the commercial industry. The nomination comes at a critical time for NASA. It recently landed the Perseverance rover on Mars, and it is pushing to return astronauts to the moon for the first time since the last Apollo mission landed there in 1972. A key test of the SLS system is scheduled Thursday. Recently, White House press secretary Jen Psaki said the Biden administration supports the effort, known as Artemis, continuing a signature Trump administration program that Nelson would now oversee. As a key member of the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee, which oversees NASA, Nelson took aim at then-President Trump’s nominee for NASA administrator, arguing that Jim Bridenstine, a former Republican congressman from Oklahoma, was not qualified in part because of his political ties. “The NASA administrator should be a consummate space professional, who is technically and scientifically competent, and is a skilled executive,” he said during Bridenstine’s confirmation hearing. “This committee has heard me say many times: NASA is not political. The leader of NASA should not be political. The leader of NASA should not be bipartisan.” After Bridentstine was confirmed by a narrow party-line vote, he worked diligently with Democrats and Republicans alike. And he appointed Nelson to a NASA advisory committee, calling him a “true champion for human spaceflight.” In 1986, as NASA was gearing up to fly civilians on the space shuttle — first a teacher, then a journalist — Nelson, then a member of the House, was able to fly first, joining the crew of NASA astronauts. Among them was Charlie Bolden, who Nelson later pushed to become administrator, rejecting other names floated by the Obama administration. Lori Garver, who served as NASA deputy administrator under President Obama, said the choice of Nelson was “an ironic turn of events considering he blocked President Obama’s top-nominees for the job in 2009 and then led the Congressional effort that dismantled the Obama-Biden strategy and proposed budget, created the Space Launch System, reinstated Orion and cut funding for technology and commercial crew.” She added that Nelson will need to under stand why the SLS rocket “has cost so much more than projected.” But she said he “has already had more influence on NASA than anyone in recent memory, so he has plenty of experience and should be able to hit the ground running.” Given his deep ties in Congress and his long interest in space, Nelson is expected to win confirmation. - Name of a band that escapes me.....In World Outside The Window·21 May 2022I wonder if someone here can solve a puzzle that has been bugging me for a couple of years regarding a band's name and their song: Early Seventies song I think (1972?) with a long dark haired female singer - could be the band in the photo I found with no name attached to it. I think they had one fairly big hit which is the song I can't recall. Any ideas anyone?17106
- Random ObservationsIn World Outside The Window9 February 2023But it would appear, as Orphan points out, that Bill has stopped interacting with his fans here at Dreamsville, other than announcements of new albums, which Mayor Jon kindly does. I totally agree with your comment Alan about how amazed you are at how much Bill interacts with his fans, and I've made several comments here in the past, echoing such sentiments...at least, that's how it used to be. I'm writing this from the perspective of someone not really involved in any social media, like quite a few other forum members I know of at DV, that just 'don't do' social media. Recently I've been having similar thoughts to Orphan, about Bill not making many/hardly any posts on this forum...and I just got to thinking why?...why has Bill abandoned things here?...He only made 12 forum posts in the whole of 2022 and apart from a Jeff Beck tribute he posted on 12th Jan. this year, the last time he posted anything was on 9th Sept. 2022 = five moths ago!...and no journal entry since 6th July 2022. Now, I do of course realise Bill has had health issues and I'm totally understanding of that, and sympathetic...So I wondered if this was why Bill had not posted anything since last September?...but then the Jeff Beck tribute from Bill popped-up...And what I really noticed was no Christmas or New Year greetings from Bill, no Christmas video card, not even a four-word post, 'Happy Christmas from Bill'...I found this highly unusual and out of character, which I did mention in some other post in Williams World a little while ago and I've never known Bill not wish his 'die-hard' fans and supporters here at DV, a happy Christmas and New Year...So, I was very disappointed, possibly even disillusioned with the 'whole thing', to say the least...As mentioned, I don't do social media, but, just for curiosities sake,I took a little look around social platforms and it appears Bill did post on Twitter on 20th Dec. 2022, wishing everyone a Happy Christmas there, including posting his 'Christmas Card Video' as well, and yet nothing here!.. so, I had no idea of this, not the faintest clue Bill had even done his usual Christmas video, nor would others here who don't indulge in Twitter and Facebook.......Got to admit, I find it all a bit strange, I don't understand why Bill ignored us here at DV at Christmas/New Year, and as I say, us non social media users having no idea Bill had posted up a Christmas video on Twitter (until just having a little dig around) = very disappointing. Anyway, I suppose Bill is the only one who knows that answer, but just to reiterate there are fans who only connect with Bill and his work here at DV, and not on other social media....If I've missed something glaringly obvious, then apologies all-round, but, at the moment at least, it would appear (to me) Bill has abandoned here, but does post and interact on other social media....At least, that's my impression, sorry if I've somehow got that wrong, but that's how it appears to me. Finally, a special shout-out to Jon Wallinger, who basically keeps the show on the road for us all here!...He does a great job coordinating everything, maintaining this site, keeping everything updated, informing us all, of all the new and upcoming Bill Nelson album releases and all that jazz!...You do a great job Jon! and a special thanks for that, as I'm sure everyone here would agree.1
