- COVID-19 JABSIn World Outside The Window·29 March 2021I've recently had my first jab (Oxford Astra Zeneca) and have suffered some reaction. I'm 63 in a few days time. I'd be interested to hear of the experience of others with respect to having the jab. I don't think all of the side effects are being reported on the NHS UK site. I'll post my experience if I get any response. - DUNCAN NOONS: REST IN PEACE.In William's World·4 August 2023It was with great sadness that I learned of the passing of long time Nelsonica team member , and friend , Duncan Noons yesterday. It came as a great shock, as I know it will to all members of the team and those that knew him. Duncan was a lovely man and a loyal supporter of my music, always kindl and thoughtful and a great help on the N elsonica merch stall for many years. Much loved by us all, my late Mother always said how much she liked Duncan too. He always made a fuss of her when she came to a Nelsonica event. I can see Dunc vividly in my mind as I type these words, and hear his distinctive voice also. I sspoke with him last year' at the Nelsonica team's annual dinner, get together, along with the other team members. I had no idea that would be the last time I would see him. 'Big Dunc' as he was affectionately known by the team, will be deeply missed by all of us in the Nelsonica family ...Thank you from my heart for all your help and support over the years Dunc, you won't be forgotten. Maty angel guitars sing you to your rest.... 🎸1415921
- FINDING TIME FOR THIS YEAR'S DREAMSVILLE CHRISTMAS VIDEO...In William's World·15 December 2021I know many fans look forward to my annual Christmas videos but this year, for various reasons, I 'm finding it a bit of a struggle to get one assembled. I ventured out, last Sunday night, to film footage of the village's Christmas lights and some of the lights in the City, despite concerns over crowds and the new, extremely transmissible, Covid variant. I've also recorded and mixed a brand new Christmas track to which I intended to edit the video footage to. Unfortunately, I'm experiencing technical problems in trying to transfer the video footage from my camcorder into my computer so that it can be edited and sequenced to the music. I've spent a frustrating evening trying to do this but with no joy. So, I will try to assemble some still images from my nostalgic graphic archives, some of which I may have used in previous years, but at least they will provide some sort of visual accompaniment to the music. Failing that, I'll simply make the new audio track available to stream. There has been an awful lot going on here of late, various problems and distractions and I seem to be way behind with Christmas generally. Not a single card bought or written and no gifts for family and friends purchased. I'm way out of the loop this year, which is really not like me at all. We live in depressing times right now but I try to keep the music coming and, hopefully, your, (and my own,) spirits lifted. 😉1115737

- 'MIXED UP KID'...THE STORY SO FAR...In William's World·23 October 2021Further to my posts on the 'MYSTERY ALBUM' thread a few weeks ago, here's the latest news about 'MIXED UP KID', a single disc album recorded after 'My Private Cosmos' was assembled. The list of possible tracks for this album has now changed. I ended up with 19 tracks to choose from and have put together a running order of 18 of them. I'm not entirely sure, at this stage, if 18 tracks will fit on a single CD, but as two or three tracks are not particularly long, we might be able to squeeze all 18 onto the disc. I've been working, these last couple of days, on the proposed running order of the tracks and will let you see that here in this post. The album contains a mixture of vocal and instrumental recordings, with a broad mix of styles, hence the album's title: 'Mixed Up Kid.' I'm very pleased with the way this one has turned out as I think there are some excellent pieces here for you to enjoy! I'm hoping to get this album released in time for Christmas, partly as a sort of companion piece to 'My Private Cosmos', but also as a less expensive alternative album of brand new recordings for fans who might feel that a six cd earbook luxury box set is a little out of reach for them at this point in time. There is still some work to do on 'Mixed Up Kid' though, and the hoped for December release date will depend on getting this done in time for manufacturing. First of all, whilst I've chosen the track running order, I haven't yet decided on which mixes of those tracks should be used. (Many of the tracks have alternative mixes.) I'll be listening carefully over the next day or so to make those important decisions. Also, artwork and package layout needs to be addressed, as does the mastering of the 18 tracks at Fairview Studio with John Spence putting the master disc together and making sure the levels of the tracks all match up. So still quite a bit to do. However, I'll try to get all this moving along as soon as possible and keep my fingers crossed for a release this year. And this one is going to really hit the spot for many of you, trust me!😉 So, here's the final running order for 'Mixed Up Kid' ! ‘MIXED UP KID’ ALBUM TRACK LIST. 1: ‘AEROPLANE MIND.’ 2: ‘THE AUTUMN BALLOONIST.’ 3: ‘A POND FOR THE MOON.’ 4: ‘CHANNEL SURFING.’ 5: ‘FLOWERS AND STARS.’ 6: ‘SATURN’S GROOVE.’ 7: ‘SHE SEES ME SLEEPING.’ 8: ‘SWITCHBACK.’ 8: ‘MAYBE IT’S MY EYES.’ 9: ‘THE ENCHANTED CATHEDRAL.’ 10: ‘SHE’S GOT FLOWER POWER.’ 11: ‘NOWHERE IN PARTICULAR.’ 12: ‘MIXED UP KID.’ ‘ 13: ‘FAR BEYOND THE WEST OF ME.’ 14: ‘THIS INFORMATION ARRIVES FROM DREAMS.’ 15: ‘WILD AND SERENE.’ 16: ‘MOON OVER ECHO LAKE.’ 17: ‘A TOUCH OF BODY AND SOUL.’ 18: ‘LONGING FOR LIGHT.’818948

- LATEST UP DATE ON A NEW ALBUM.In William's World·11 March 2022As of 11th March 2022, here's the latest news on the album I'm currently working on: The album which was originally going to be called 'Man Of Dreams' has now undergone changes, not only in title but in form. There are currently 33 tracks recorded and mixed for this project which will be sequenced into TWO separate albums. Album 1 will be titled 'Marvellous Realms' and album 2 will be titled 'Here on Earth'. Well, that's subject to any furtherr revisions that may come into the equation as the tracks are sorted into individual running orders. All I can say is that there are some wonderful moments amongst them and I'm very happy with the way things are going. The albums will, I hope, have a simultaneous release and possibly a modest launch party and fan get together later this year. As always, stay tuned for more news on this. Meanwhile, here is an updated list of tracks recorded so far: 1: ‘A SHOWER OF SPARKS.’ 2: ‘SOME JIGGERY POKERY.’ 3: ‘A COMPASS IN MY MIND.’ 4: ‘IN THE BRIGHT TWILIGHT SKY.’ 5: ‘ALL THE FUN OF THE FAIR.’ 6: ‘A MAGIC FRAME OF MIND.’ 7: ‘FAST FORWARD, SLO-MO.’ 8: ‘RUNNING FROM MY OWN SHADOW.’ 9: ‘ MAN OF DREAMS.’ 10: ‘SHAPE SHIFTER.’ 11: ‘SIGNALLING AS WE GO.’ 12: ‘THE WEATHER SONG.’ 13: ‘STARS AND HALOES.’ 14: ‘BEEP BEEP BEEP.’ 15: ‘THE CLOUD ENGINEER.’ 16: ‘A DISTANT MEMORY.’ 17: ‘THIS MAY SOUND STRANGE.’ 18: ‘A LITTLE WOOZY.’ 19: ‘THE WAY OF THE WORLD.’ 20: ‘OBSIDIAN MIRROR.’ 21: ‘MEMORIES AND RECOLLECTIONS.’ 22: ‘PUSH THE BUTTON, SPIN THE DIAL.’ 23: ‘ELEVATOR TRANSCENDANT.’ 24: ‘CHELSEA FLASH.’ 25: ‘IT’S A LONG TIME BETWEEN DREAMS.’ 26: ‘MADAME MIDNIGHT.’ 27: ‘THEME FROM AN ENGLISH ECHO CHAMBER.’ 28: ‘HERE ON EARTH.’ 29: ‘THE SILENT HOUR.’ 30: ‘WIND IT UP AND WATCH IT GO.’ 31: ‘AZTEC HELICOPTER.’ 32: ‘KEEP YOUR TELESCOPE FOCUSSED ON THE STARS.’ 33: ‘MARVELLOUS REALMS.’8171176
- Non-LP tracks circa Red Noise > ChimeraIn William's World·12 July 2024Went down a wormhole trying to organize early non-album tracks into something like chronological groups. Did research as possible and then put on headphones and used my ears to try to parse the home recordings via tech, recording quality, and to some extent songwriting. (Has all this already been sorted?) BILL NELSON: A Thought Experiment About Imaginary Releases of Stray Tracks, 1979-1982 What if Bill Nelson had been able to release his new music at the speed of creation, rather than being in a situation where the recordings trickled out in a way that obscured their approximate chronology? It seems impossible to accurately reconstruct that chronology, but song credits and the sonic evidence get you pretty close. Red Noise 12-inch • Instantly Yours • Wonder Toys that Last Forever • Ideal Homes • Acquitted by Mirrors Quit Dreaming-Adjacent Single #1(Leckie/Mobile Unit = album outtakes) • White Sound • Mr. Magnetism Himself • Atom Man Loves Radium Girl Quit Dreaming-Adjacent Single #2 (Presumably pure home recordings, but robust!) • The World and His Wife • Dancing Music • Dream Car Romantics Home Recordings Part 1 (35 minutes) These feature Nelson’s original “rhythm unit” - the most technologically naive recordings. All surely tracks he had ready at the time of recording “Quit Dreaming.” • Touch & Glow • Turn to Fiction • Hers is a Lush Situation • Dada Guitare • Rooms with Brittle Views • Shadowland • Be My Dynamo • All My Wives Were Iron • The Beat that Can’t Go Wrong Today • Sleepcycle • King of the Cowboys Home Recordings Part 2 (43 minutes) New tech appears in the home recordings, and the recording sonics improve. Some tunes lean earlier, while many usher in sounds and songwriting impulses of “The Love That Whirls” period and possibly a bit later (c. “Chimera”). Side one is a strong pop music gambit. Side One: Vocal Tracks (22 minutes) • Dancing in the Wind • When the Birds Return • Love Without Fear • Indiscretion • Love in the Abstract Side Two: Instrumental Tracks (21 minutes) • Birds of Tin • Junc Sculpture • Daily Bells • Carnival • Rhythm Unit • Konnie Buys a Kodak • Tony Goes to Tokyo • Spring Love That Whirls-Adjacent Studio Tracks (30 minutes) A more generous version of the “Flaming Desire and Other Passions” mini-LP. “Hard Facts” is apparently a home recording and sounds so good that it might be latest track in this list. Eros Arriving (single version) Haunting in My Head Flesh He and Sleep Were Brothers The Passion The Burning Question Hard Facts from the Fiction Department What Happens Next? “Dancing on a Knife’s Edge” is the only dangling track before the BN stray tracks obviously move on to new pastures. I’d say it’s a “Chimera” or “Holy Ghost” adjacent track.817607
- Fiat Lux - better late than neverIn William's World·14 March 2019I mentioned this elsewhere, but let’s give a thread to Fiat Lux. They are being included here in William’s World because they were the band with whom Ian Nelson very nearly made it big. Between 1982 and 1985, they went through all the right stages: critically acclaimed indie single produced by well-known name (er, yes, none other than Bill himself); major label contract; very-near-miss singles; support from BBC Radio 1 DJs; hotly anticipated debut album; and… Well that’s where it went wrong. The album didn’t happen because the label insisted on a proper hit single before releasing it. The nearly completed album tapes surfaced many years later and in that form are still easily found online (search under ‘Fac Ut Vivas’). The promo video and live footage compilation VHS tape – see Y**T*be – included songs that were never released but would have been on the album. Then followed thirty years of a strong awareness that this was not a good end to a story. Ian’s death in 2006 emphasised that this was a band that would never be likely to get its moment in the sun. In the years that followed, Bill mentioned a couple of times his own hopes of compiling a CD release for Fiat Lux’s material. Let’s just appreciate Fiat Lux for a moment. FL are described on Wikipedia and elsewhere as a ‘synthpop band’ and this is fair enough as a quick summary. But actually, very few of the sounds were synths. What stands out these days is the ever-changing combinations of electronic rhythms with clarinet, saxophone, acoustic guitar, rumbling electric bass and the strong, deep tones of singer Steve Wright’s voice. The other special element is the boldness of the arrangements for and between instruments. Best song from the album is ‘The Moment’ - deceptively simple but so beautifully constructed. This band had something special going on. The other member was David Crickmore and he seems to have been the one most keen to move freely between instruments and bring out strong contrasts between sections of individual songs. So now, in 2019, Cherry Red have finally compiled a 2CD retrospective of Fiat Lux’s career. Basically, it consists of the unreleased album (at last!), plus the six singles (A’s and B’s), plus the two tracks produced by Bill but never released in any form. [Bill recorded FL’s second single (Photography / Comfortable Life) with them but the Polydor people wanted the songs re-recorded for the band’s major label debut]. This stuff is just fabulous and the CD release is all taken from the original mastertapes. While you are over at the Cherry Red site ordering the Futurama re-issue, take a moment to add Fiat Lux’s ‘Hired History Plus’ (named after the singles mini-album that leads the 2CD set) to your order. And not just that….. Over at Proper Music https://www.propermusic.com/artist/Fiat-Lux-119055 is the chance to buy the first album by the reformed Fiat Lux (just Wright and Crickmore, with guests). This was released just last week and I must say that (to my surprise) it has turned out to be such a great album. Everything that was uniquely Fiat Lux is still there, particularly in the soaring, interesting use of clarinet and sax – not quite as Ian Nelson would have played them but clearly intended to continue the approach and pay tribute to Ian in where and how they are used. The gorgeous bass and strong vocals are also very much as they should be. The album is called ‘Saved Sympathy’ and is full of strong, sincere songs with rich vocals, clever arrangements and a quality that is simultaneously 1980s and something a bit smarter than that – which is what Fiat Lux always were. If he’s happy to do so, I’d love to hear Bill’s thoughts on the band and its music and any memories of that time in his brother’s life. Did Cherry Red get in touch about the CD compilation?817664
- AI...just how concerned should we be?In World Outside The Window·31 August 2022There's a lot of 'information' out there, regarding the current state and position of Artificial Intelligence, and it's relationship and balance with human beings...It's continued exponential growth and development, and the many possible future scenarios, both good and frighteningly bad, is a subject that warrants very careful thought, consideration and respect...I think it's hard to say at the minute exactly what will happen, pure speculation, but AI's rather mind-blowing achievements and progression so far, can't be denied..the AI generated art of Midjourney and others, a good example. Are you excited, concerned, fearful?.....For me, I think it's a mix of all these feelings, but I do believe this will most certainly come with a dark-side....only time will tell...possibly sooner than later..😐 I thought this video was rather interesting:136375
