I love this new album …. it twists and turns with its beautiful textures sounds and rhythmic shifts, it’s reminiscent of Old haunts, Golden melodies of tomorrow and The Alchemical adventures of sailor Bill ….. it has that unique Bill Nelson twist and sounds better with every play …..an interesting aside, l purchased the download while waiting for the cd to arrive and didn’t pay attention to the track order when unzipping the .wav files …. the cd l burned sounded disjointed and odd to me, so when l started listening to the actual cd as intended the difference was startling….. like reading a book with the chapters out of sync. The album is best listened to as a whole ….. fabulous

A wonderful version of Gloria Mundae filmed by Ian Bair (nee Clark) from the 'Be bop and beyond tour" in 2004 .. the venue (The Tyne theatre in Newcastle) was beautiful and in stark contrast to the previous night in Edinburgh where I admit to leaving before the end of the show 😒 a cramped bloody awful place with toilets from hell ..I imagine there are folks who loved that venue ... but I'm a sensitive lad you know 😂

All the talk about Working men's clubs sparked my memory of another Northern working man's invention that of 'Northern soul" born out of mostly Motown rejects from little known American black soul groups in the mid-1960s ..this documentary gives a fabulous background to the beginnings and current obsession with the Northern soul phenomenon Being 18 in 1976 and growing up in Leeds and Wakefield I was oblivious to the Northern soul cult happening just 50 miles away in Wigan and much closer to me in Sheffield and Dewsbury ... my only connection with it is through a 45rpm single I came across in my job as a Jukebox tech in Leeds in 1976 where I had access to thousands of singles ... I instantly fell in love with this song by R Dean Taylor ...There's a ghost in my house and its B side which I actually preferred "Let's go somewhere" which unknowingly to me at the time fed my desire for something or somewhere "different " 😉 ....I'm still looking 🤷‍♂️ The only song that comes to mind of Bill Nelsons that has a slight soul tint is 'A certain thought passed through my mind" from Clocks and dials ... with the amazing lyric "there was nothing left to say ...that's how it all begins"😍

Old haunts is a masterpiece ... from first listen the whole album resonated with me ... the style the production the superb musicianship ... not one to compare but l hear hints of “golden melodies of tomorrow“ and “simplex” in the mix ... the songs have a complexity and simplicity to them ... it does demand an attentive listener and isn’t one to cherry pick... its ridiculous that one man can continue to create such beautiful music after all that has already gone before .... long live Bill Nelson ♥️
