- The Bradbury BuildingIn World Outside The Window·11 March 2021Seen in more than a few movies, The Bradbury Building is almost a character unto itself. The Bradbury opened in 1893, long before the movies ever came to L.A. For the record, it’s not named after sci-fi novelist Ray Bradbury, but for Lewis Bradbury– a gold mining millionaire who decided he wanted to make a building with his name on it. In 1892, Lewis Bradbury commissioned Sumner Hunt, a famous architect, to design his building. As the story goes, Bradbury didn’t like any of the plans that Hunt showed him, and so, disappointed, was on his way out when, for some reason, one of Hunt’s young draftsmen caught his eye. George Wyman, the draftsman, had no professional training as an architect. Bradbury pulled Wyman aside and asked him to build his very important half-million dollar office building. Here are some of the productions that have used The Bradbury Building as a location: “D.O.A.” (1950) featuring Edmund O’Brien. The Outer Limits episode “Demon With A Glass Hand” (1964), with Robert Culp. Bruce Lee in “Marlowe” (1969). Of course, “Blade Runner” (1982) with Harrison Ford. Jack Nicholson was there for “Wolf” (1994). The Bradbury, as seen in the film "The Artist" (2011). Anyone have other images? .2385
- Rooms with Brittle Views (1981 remake)In William's World·18 July 2024I'm currently obsessed with the Kid Jensen version of this song, which is new to me this week. YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GRJzwFanf6A The single version was recorded in Autumn 1979 (per sleeve notes), which is just a few months after the "Quit Dreaming" sessions (February-June, 1979). The Jensen version was broadcast in June 1981, which puts it inside the date-span of "The Love That Whirls" sessions ("between Spring and Autumn, 1981). And it sounds EXACTLY like TLTW moment. Glorious. The definitive take, IMO. (Sadly, though this version was released on "The Practice of Everyday Life" box set, current digital purchase versions of that set don't include it or the other radio broadcasts that made up the final disc. Licensing limitations have been a curse for BN and his back catalogue, and I really sympathize.)23191

- Look at the state we're in...In World Outside The Window5 July 2021'[Boris] Johnson "lies so blatantly, so naturally, so regularly" that he sees "no real distinction".... "routinely says and does things so foolish that people are open-mouthed"... "in any objective sense, unfit to be PM".' Meanwhile, Lying-Moron-in-Chief Johnson says, of relaxing all Covid restrictions, "If not now, when?" To which I'd reply, "When the graph showing infections of the most dangerous strain yet isn't running vertically upwards. You total imbecile." I'm a big fan.15

- Name of instrumentIn William's World·3 May 2021Hi...I've really enjoyed the newer recordings and 'Return To Tomorrow'. 'Freak Me Out' and 'Chills For You' stand out for me. I really like the drum sounds you used on that album as well as on 'Luminous'. May you please tell me the name of that drum machine or keyboard - Bill or someone in the know? Retrofuturistically yours, lifelong listener.15153

- WILLIAM'S WONDERFUL WORLD OF GUITARS. (A personal series of six string sentiments...)In William's World17 September 2020I had a Hagstrom Swede in the '70s and also the Patch 2000 Swede which interfaced with synths. I seem to recall being featured in an advert for Hagstrom too. I think someone, somewhere might still have a copy of that. If so, it would be nice to see it posted in this thread.15

- The ListenersIn William's World·17 May 2022The Listeners By Walter de la Mare ‘Is there anybody there?’ said the Traveller, Knocking on the moonlit door; And his horse in the silence champed the grasses Of the forest’s ferny floor: And a bird flew up out of the turret, Above the Traveller’s head: And he smote upon the door again a second time; ‘Is there anybody there?’ he said. But no one descended to the Traveller; No head from the leaf-fringed sill Leaned over and looked into his grey eyes, Where he stood perplexed and still. But only a host of phantom listeners That dwelt in the lone house then Stood listening in the quiet of the moonlight To that voice from the world of men: Stood thronging the faint moonbeams on the dark stair, That goes down to the empty hall, Hearkening in an air stirred and shaken By the lonely Traveller’s call. And he felt in his heart their strangeness, Their stillness answering his cry, While his horse moved, cropping the dark turf, ’Neath the starred and leafy sky; For he suddenly smote on the door, even Louder, and lifted his head:— ‘Tell them I came, and no one answered, That I kept my word,’ he said. Never the least stir made the listeners, Though every word he spake Fell echoing through the shadowiness of the still house From the one man left awake: Ay, they heard his foot upon the stirrup, And the sound of iron on stone, And how the silence surged softly backward, When the plunging hoofs were gone.15239

- Dazzlebox Giveaway - US mainland onlyIn World Outside The Window·23 December 2021Admin - if I'm breaking any rules etc. feel free to shut this down. I ordered My Private Cosmos a few weeks ago and decided to try and complete my Bill collection by also ordering Mixed Up Kid and Dazzlebox. I am lucky enough to be a winner of the drawing competition. I knew as soon as I opened the package on Tuesday that I already had Dazzlebox. I'm sure I'm not the first or last person to do that while cd's are still being produced. So I will give away the new copy (still shrinkwrapped), but I'm limiting it to US mainland only - sorry Rest of the World. I don't really want to do first come first served but I want it pretty easy to set up. So if you're US mainland based and would like it - please respond with a Yes Please and after 10 people respond I'll do a drawing of 10 numbers to correspond with the first 10 names. I'll try to monitor this but I'm cooking on Christmas Day and out visiting Christmas Eve so I may not draw until Boxing Day (Sunday to Americans). Cutoff will be Sunday at 10.00 Pacific if there's not 10 names. I'll then ship off next week. I'll pm the winner to get the address. This is a very friendly forum - if I'm not doing this the way you would please don't shoot me down. Merry Christmas all - I haven't been popping in that much recently and hope you are all well. ps - needless to say to enter you must not already have a copy :) Dave15106
- RIP Taylor HawkinsIn World Outside The Window·26 March 2022I am finding it hard to believe, but Foo Fighters drummer, Taylor Hawkins, has passed away at the ridiculously young age of 50. No cause of death has been given as yet. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-60884259?at_campaign=KARANGA&at_medium=RSS&fbclid=IwAR2Pd9KLtU1vlKiaUWy7jW1Co4G-3XUkO7c12BuXkdDfbaSEdw9SRV7SNxk15107
- Emil Richards (1932 - 2019)In William's World·16 December 2019Emil Richards (born Emilio Joseph Radocchia), 2 September, 1932 - 14 December, 2019, was an American vibraphonist and percussionist. All his solo records are great but three stand out for me as even more incredible than the others, Stones (1967), Journey To Bliss (1968) and The Spirit of 1976/Live at Donte's (1969). He was on records by everyone from Frank Sinatra to George Harrison to Julie London to L. Subramanian to Frank Zappa.15254
