- Nelson's ColumnIn William's World17 August 2022Nice piece, although some might take issue with the assertion that "his [Bill's] career was stunted by the eruption of punk in the mid-1970s", and that "His excellence as a player counted for nothing once the gritty minimalism of the new wave bared its teeth." I would contend that Bill happily embraced some key elements of punk and new wave and, artistically at least, it did no harm to his career. Also, various respected musicians from the late 70s and early 80s have cited Bill as an example of someone who aspired to doing something beyond occupying 'axe hero' status, and hence was able to survive that era with his credibility very much intact.51
- END OF AN ERA...In William's World12 September 2022It's all about what kind of a person you are really, what your intrinsic values are. I would have thought having the good grace and manners to keep such, really quite vitriolic, comments to yourself, at such a sensitive time, would have been the prudent thing to do...However it (still) is a free country, so there you go. Just for some clarity, the British Empire no longer exists. It was the Queen who oversaw the dismantling of this and the transformation of the empire into the commonwealth, which is not an imperial institution. This marked an end to Britain's old relationship with the world as it existed, prior to the Queen coming to the throne. So the Queen was not the head of an empire and that was the whole point. We are now starting to see a whole rush of people, especially those with connections and affiliations to the extreme left, who are using the death of the Queen to try and push their own politicised agendas, which I find wholly repugnant and unsavoury...and some of the vile comments I've read, posted on social media, just beggar belief. The Queen was a ceremonial monarch, a constitutional monarch, she didn't set foreign policy or represent political agendas, in any way. So, in actual fact, her role was more of a decorative one and she was not involved in politics. To this end, she did not express her own political views and she kept her private life separate from her public role. I would say, being nasty and horrible to a 96-year-old lady who has just died, and doing so on a public platform, is not a great thing to do. Holding your council and showing a little respect under such circumstances would seem the right thing to do...But there no doubt will be many such comments and far worse to come... Remember, you don't have to say everything that's on your mind, especially if it's negative. To round this up, many people will find the Queen was our tie with history, a constant, she connected us with the past and, especially during tough times she connected us with each other, with a genuine care, I believe. Possibly the last part of the establishment that respects British history, that didn't want to undo history, tear down statues, rename buildings, and try and redefine everything. She had a respect for that and it's these kinds of values that cuts against the grain of the ever increasing narcissistic and often hysterical era, fuelled to a large extent by the woke-driven idiocies and agendas of the progressive/extreme left, that we now find ourselves in... genuinely, frightening and dangerous times. In losing the Queen, a connection with the past, all our past's, has been lost and it's this that people will feel very strongly. As for your personal beliefs regarding end-of-life possible experiences, well they are just that, your own beliefs, totally subjective thoughts, whether that scenario be for the Queen, or indeed for yourself. So your end comment is meaningless for anyone but you.5
- Tender Is The Night (1983)In William's World20 September 2022Chimera is such a perfect album that almost any track from it could have been a single (I recall Tony Mitchell in Sounds chiding Mercury Records for not releasing one). But we all have our favourites, and for me the pinnacle is 'Another Day, Another Ray of Hope', an absolute classic. Always a great disappointment to me that UK audiences were never afforded the opportunity to see the Chimera/Vistamix songs played live. What a show that would have been.51
- PhotosIn World Outside The Window22 January 2023Just got back from a vacation in Costa Rica. 3-19 January, and it still wasn’t long enough. This guy visited us on a banana tree off the back deck, every morning during our breakfast. We also had tanagers, coti, macaws & other wildlife. Quite refreshing to be out of the cold of Kansas City & be able to swim every day in 82°F (27.8°C) weather. Our view, with the banana trees on the left. Could get used to this. .51

- Look at the state we're in...In World Outside The Window5 November 2020Trump is already trying to gum up the works with lawsuits. He's desperate to delay his departure from the White House as long as possible, should he not win a second term. But if he does lose, he may well find he gets a different kind of term, once his Presidential immunity is removed.51

- RIP Scott WalkerIn World Outside The Window·25 March 2019My older sisters were big Walker Brothers fans when I was growing up. Some of it rubbed off on me. Later I finally got round to buying some of Scott's solo albums on CD. Sometimes challenging, but always original when recording his own work. We've lost another of music's mavericks.29222
- A Bill Nelson MiscellanyIn William's World16 March 2021A fan photo' of myself and my late friend Alan Quinn, performing as 'The Practical Dreamers' at 'The Warehouse' club in Leeds in the 1980s. Alan is playing my Aria bass which I'd lent him for those gigs. I'm playing the Yamaha SG 2000 that I originally bought to stand in for my Gibson 345 with late period Be Bop Deluxe. I sold that Yamaha when I was going through hard times in the early '90s. Wish I still had it. The jacket I'm wearing was an old American marching band uniform which I'd bought from a shop in London's Covent Garden. I actually ended up in an argument with Annie Lennox about that jacket when I was espousing left wing socialist views and Annie said, "how can you be a socialist when you're wearing expensive clothes like that?" She was totally unaware that the jacket was second hand and had cost me next to nothing to buy. Goes to show, you don't need lots of money to be stylish, just a knack for putting the right pieces of clothing together, even if they're cheap, second hand clothes.29

I've previously been in touch with Richard for requests etc and he has alawys been quite obliging. I am going to get back in touch and give him the heads up on Bills still active career and ask him to play something more in the style of recent Bill. What would be the fave rave to recommend to Richard...any ideas. I know what a choice29375

- Jon Strong/Bill NelsonIn William's World·8 May 2019'Many' years ago i saw the John Strong Band at a pub on the outskirts of Harrogate, i have seen this band several times on the circuit around Leeds but was intrigued at this particular gig after noticing one of the equipment cases highlighted with BeBop Deluxe. It was only recently looking to see if John Strong was still performing that i came across this rather interesting article on Mr Strong's Facebook site possibly relating to the above.. "First saw Bill Nelson, Be-Bop Deluxe in Meanwood, Leeds, think it was called the “Cat’s Whiskers” an old Mecca ballroom. Knew a guy whose name escapes me who was Bill’s sort of roadie, minder type thing, lovely guy who also played in a band called, “Red Lorry, Yellow Lorry” I was looking for a flight case for an up coming tour in Holland and Germany and he said Bill had got a mountain of flight cases in his garage and I was very welcome to have a root around and take my pick. Brilliant, I get to meet one of my heroes and maybe get a good deal on the flight case I needed for the mixing desk, this was around 1987. We met up with “ Red Lorry Yellow Lorry” in a café somewhere near Wakefield and we followed him to Bill’s house near Eggborough, it was quite close to the power station but then again everything was. We were met on the drive by Bill, and invited in for tea & coffee, chatted around for half an hour and then invited up into his studio. There was a small stage set up in the room, more like a drum riser with some of the most beautiful guitars I’d ever seen in one place and he then proceeded to play some music, straight off the 24 track, unmixed things he was working on, sort of Chinesey stuff. Brilliant He was an absolute gentleman, warm, gracious and friendly, completely lacking in any stardom type affectation thing, in fact just the opposite. Very nice bloke. The conversation came back to flightcases and we were led down to the garage. Big enough I recon to hold at least 6 cars, on the far right a very nice white Porsche 911 SC Targa, mid ‘70’s and a Citroen 2CV, went with the vibe of the guy totally for me. We had the mixing desk on the floor and tape measures and Bill proceeded to climb this mountain of aluminium and plywood and took great delight in carrying it down for us. He opened the case and there was a Gibson SG inside, obviously not meant for that particular case. “Bloody Hell he said, forgotten about that one” We were all overjoyed at the liberation of such a lovely thing, I paid £50 for the flight case, shook hands warmly and carried on down the M62 to Hull to catch the ferry to Holland." By the way Jon and the Band are still performing a very good musician with great lyrics, Check out Jon Strong VRC0376 the killing fields/wear my boots and tie on YouTube29748
- Viola Smith, swing era’s ‘fastest girl drummer in the world,’ dies at 107In World Outside The Window·26 October 2020by Adam Bernstein | The Washington Post Oct. 23, 2020 at 11:30 a.m. CDT Viola Smith, a swing-era musician who was promoted in the 1930s as the “fastest girl drummer in the world” and who championed greater inclusion of women in the almost completely male preserve of big bands, died Oct. 21 at her home in Costa Mesa, Calif. She was 107. The cause was complications from Alzheimer’s disease, said her nephew, Dennis Bartash. With a kit featuring 12 drums, including two giant tom-toms placed near her shoulders, Ms. Smith was from 1938 to 1941 the centerpiece of the Coquettes, an “all-girl” big band that developed a modest national following. Her showcase was “The Snake Charmer,” a jazzy arabesque with explosions of drumming pyrotechnics. In an era when the dance bands of Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller andArtie Shawdominated the charts, Ms. Smith belonged to a coterie of female bandleaders who struggled to gain respect for their musicianship. One reviewer called her a “pulchritudinous miss who so adeptly maneuvers the drums and cymbals.” Ms. Smith had created the Coquettes from the remnants of her Wisconsin family’s all-female band in which she was one of eight musical sisters. She favored crisp and swinging arrangements and was, by several accounts, an egalitarian leader who valued the input of her employees in major business and artistic decisions. More than a pleasant timekeeper, she was a dervish behind the drums and found it difficult to conduct the group while playing. She turned over baton duties to Frances Carroll, a flame-haired, hip-swiveling singer and dancerwhose ravishing looks were accented by decolletage-baring gowns. The band, soon known as Frances Carroll & the Coquettes, played at nightclubs and dance halls and appeared in several short films and on the cover of the entertainment trade magazine Billboard before dissolving. more .3688
