I recently heard an hour long program on the music of Harold Budd and was totally enchanted. What albums of his do you recommend to get me started? Thank you!
'By The Dawn's Early Light' for me, and not just because I took part in its recording but because it has Harold reciting some of his own poetry on certain tracks and hearing his voice brings him back from another realm to momentarily be with me again. My other favourite is 'Pavilion Of Dreams' because it reminds me of how I discovered Harold's music back in the late '70s and also because it is stunningly beautiful.
Thank you Bill and everyone else who responded to my question. From the responses it seems that all of Harold’s is worth having and you really can’t go wrong💜
My first Harold Budd LP was the first one Bill got, which is The Pavilion of Dreams (1978). Must've been 1980 when I heard it, though. From there I got Ambient 2: The Plateaux Of Mirror (1980) and then I got The Pearl (1984), which was so anticipated. Seemed really like an eternity between 'Mirror' and 'Pearl.' Everyone was so excited when 'Pearl' was released. Was pretty much chronological with H.B., me. You can't go wrong with those three, not that you could ever go wrong with Harold Budd releases, but I think those are a great place to start. The only one that I didn't understand right away was Abandoned Cities (1984).
