- RIP Ryuichi SakamotoIn World Outside The Window·2 April 2023Beloved collaborator of Yann Tomita and Bill Nelson, and a friend to all. When he formed Yellow Magic Orchestra in 1978, Bill Nelsons everywhere were dying to get in the studio and record guitar for them. Pioneers in the fields of synthesizers, samplers, sequencers, drum machines, computers, and digital recording technology, they anticipated the "electropop boom" of the 1980s. Their disco-influenced rhythms, beautiful synth-laden melodies, and vocal lines with the vocoder effect anticipated Daft Punk, who died themselves just two years ago, decades before they would don the robot helmets. It’s no wonder that when Sakamoto moved on to making solo music, Japanese icon Yann Tomita hopped on the play-steel-drums-for-this-guy train as soon as he could. And surely enough, in 1984, that train pulled up to the station. While not quite as big a success as his ‘Thousand Knives’ album, ‘Ongaku zukan’ has the Yann Tomita-heavy masterpiece Paradise Lost, a beautiful piece with a repetitive yet somewhat melodic bassline meshing perfectly with the rhythm guitar to form a rhythmic foundation for Sakamoto’s exotic synths and Tomita’s carefree steel drums. Tomita often goes back and forth between traditional caribbean melodies and something closer to a jazzy piano line, but his playing always compliments the rhythm section. The synth and saxophone flourishes towards the end add textural variety. Unfortunately for Sakamoto, all good things must come to an end. A mere 39 years after recording Paradise Lost, Ryuichi Sakamoto died of cancer on the 28th of March, 2023. He was 71.44234

- Bill on the bassIn William's World·17 October 2020Hi Bill, or anyone who can input on this? I know you probably play bass guitar aswell? Just wondering what bass, or basses you have, and what model you favour? Thanks in advance.112647
- Has anyone else encoutered this?In World Outside The Window·25 October 2021A fan video I tried to post was blocked worldwide due to copyright concerns. Support material: I've posted similar videos (they have copyright claims listed on the YouTube posting page and they have not been blocked) and all the material in this video is available on youtube. Has anyone else encountered a problem like this? Thanks in advance for the feedback!112132
- Doctors of MadnessIn William's World·7 March 2019When I saw Be Bop Deluxe for the second time in January 1976; (I think it was then), they were supported by Doctors of Madness. The gig was at The Hull City Hall and the support act got booed off. The lead singer on departing the stage had a few passing comments on Be Bop Deluxe. If I remember correctly he said something along the lines of 'get ready for Top of the Pops'. I ask if Bill or anyone else remembers the parting gesture? I didn't particularly like what they presented that day, and I have never listened to them since, until, that is sometime soon. I've managed to pick up a bargain priced second hand box set of their entire output. Will I like it?112410

- PhotosIn World Outside The Window8 July 2023I just got back from a few days in Kington in Herefordshire near the Welsh border. It is situated at the east end of Hergest Ridge after which Mike Oldfield's second album is named. Here are some photos: Whetstone surface Monkey Puzzle tree close up The England-Wales border runs across this photo cutting through the intersection of the paths. I was on Hanter Hill in Wales looking at Hergest Ridge in England. The Whetstone on Hergest Ridge looking across at Hanter Hill, 2023... ...and the same shot (almost) from 1976.51

- Nelson's ColumnIn William's World17 August 2022Nice piece, although some might take issue with the assertion that "his [Bill's] career was stunted by the eruption of punk in the mid-1970s", and that "His excellence as a player counted for nothing once the gritty minimalism of the new wave bared its teeth." I would contend that Bill happily embraced some key elements of punk and new wave and, artistically at least, it did no harm to his career. Also, various respected musicians from the late 70s and early 80s have cited Bill as an example of someone who aspired to doing something beyond occupying 'axe hero' status, and hence was able to survive that era with his credibility very much intact.51
- END OF AN ERA...In William's World12 September 2022It's all about what kind of a person you are really, what your intrinsic values are. I would have thought having the good grace and manners to keep such, really quite vitriolic, comments to yourself, at such a sensitive time, would have been the prudent thing to do...However it (still) is a free country, so there you go. Just for some clarity, the British Empire no longer exists. It was the Queen who oversaw the dismantling of this and the transformation of the empire into the commonwealth, which is not an imperial institution. This marked an end to Britain's old relationship with the world as it existed, prior to the Queen coming to the throne. So the Queen was not the head of an empire and that was the whole point. We are now starting to see a whole rush of people, especially those with connections and affiliations to the extreme left, who are using the death of the Queen to try and push their own politicised agendas, which I find wholly repugnant and unsavoury...and some of the vile comments I've read, posted on social media, just beggar belief. The Queen was a ceremonial monarch, a constitutional monarch, she didn't set foreign policy or represent political agendas, in any way. So, in actual fact, her role was more of a decorative one and she was not involved in politics. To this end, she did not express her own political views and she kept her private life separate from her public role. I would say, being nasty and horrible to a 96-year-old lady who has just died, and doing so on a public platform, is not a great thing to do. Holding your council and showing a little respect under such circumstances would seem the right thing to do...But there no doubt will be many such comments and far worse to come... Remember, you don't have to say everything that's on your mind, especially if it's negative. To round this up, many people will find the Queen was our tie with history, a constant, she connected us with the past and, especially during tough times she connected us with each other, with a genuine care, I believe. Possibly the last part of the establishment that respects British history, that didn't want to undo history, tear down statues, rename buildings, and try and redefine everything. She had a respect for that and it's these kinds of values that cuts against the grain of the ever increasing narcissistic and often hysterical era, fuelled to a large extent by the woke-driven idiocies and agendas of the progressive/extreme left, that we now find ourselves in... genuinely, frightening and dangerous times. In losing the Queen, a connection with the past, all our past's, has been lost and it's this that people will feel very strongly. As for your personal beliefs regarding end-of-life possible experiences, well they are just that, your own beliefs, totally subjective thoughts, whether that scenario be for the Queen, or indeed for yourself. So your end comment is meaningless for anyone but you.5
- Tender Is The Night (1983)In William's World20 September 2022Chimera is such a perfect album that almost any track from it could have been a single (I recall Tony Mitchell in Sounds chiding Mercury Records for not releasing one). But we all have our favourites, and for me the pinnacle is 'Another Day, Another Ray of Hope', an absolute classic. Always a great disappointment to me that UK audiences were never afforded the opportunity to see the Chimera/Vistamix songs played live. What a show that would have been.51
- END OF AN ERA...In William's World19 September 2022Well said Tourist… It’s very easy for people to hide behind a username and bravely say what they like, unfiltered, with no regard of who they may upset…but there are far better forums, chat rooms, anti-establishment websites to air those opinions. Why choose a forum belonging to a musician, whom these nameless and faceless people presumably admire, to stir and spread their hatred? Love or hate the monarchy, I personally believe that the world would be a much better place if people could just learn to BE KIND!5
- END OF AN ERA...In William's World19 September 2022I believe that Bill is not a monarchist, but as ever, in his excellent writing style, with consideration, he has set the tone with a respect and dignity that Queen Elizabeth deserves,51

- PhotosIn World Outside The Window22 January 2023Just got back from a vacation in Costa Rica. 3-19 January, and it still wasn’t long enough. This guy visited us on a banana tree off the back deck, every morning during our breakfast. We also had tanagers, coti, macaws & other wildlife. Quite refreshing to be out of the cold of Kansas City & be able to swim every day in 82°F (27.8°C) weather. Our view, with the banana trees on the left. Could get used to this. .51
- Cherry Red 16 disc deluxe set of Live! In The Air AgeIn William's World7 August 2024This a copy/paste of a comment Stephen W Tayler left on the Steve Hoffman Music Forums. I cannot link to the original, so this is off a copy I keep with my boxed set rip. I have changed the font colour where SWT says he sourced the recordings from different performances to your selection. The original album used the following tracks: Life In The Air Age - Leeds 1 - 13th February Ships In The Night - Leeds 1 - 13th February Piece Of Mine - Bristol - 27th March Fair Exchange - Leeds 1 - 13th February Shine - Leeds 1 - 13th February Sister Seagull - Leeds 2 - 14th February Maid In Heaven - Hammersmith 2 - 26th March Mill Street Junction - Hammersmith 1 - 25th March Adventures In A Yorkshire Landscape - Leeds 2 - 14th February Blazing Apostles - Hammersmith 2 - 26th March None of the tracks from Leicester or Bournemouth shows were used. As you can see the original release was compiled from several different shows, and some very small parts repaired or replaced - usually for technical issues. It was a very special and particular production approach and so in this case I decided not to be influenced by those mixes. This set of full shows is not a remix as such, but a brand new mix, trying to recreate the feeling of being there in the theatre, leaving in all the audience response, introductions and talk between the tracks. It might have been nice to have a surround version, but decisions had to be made about what would be realistic and practical in terms of how much material we had. Imagine how many discs there would have been! These are carefully and lovingly mixed, and experiencing these wonderful dynamic live performances was so exciting for me. Yes it is aimed at true enthusiasts and everyone will probably have a favourite! SWTx Stephen W Tayler51

- A FLYER AND A MEMORY...In William's World·12 November 2019Here is a flyer for my 'AUDITORIA' album which features a shot of Wakefield's 'Regal' ABC Cinema from the 1950s. I performed on that stage as a schoolboy in my band 'The Cosmonauts' and later with 'Group 66' and 'The Gibson Trio,' (when my mother and father sat in the balcony to watch me play.) Back then it looked as grand and glamorous as it does in this photo' but now it's a sad ruin and looks as if demolition is on the cards. Such is life...51369
- My Private Cosmos - Pre-order NOW!!!In William's World21 November 2021You may be pleased to know that I signed more postcards than was originally intended, so 50 people who thought they'd missed out on the signed cards will get one with their package. But every copy of the album will contain a postcard whether signed or not. Also everyone will get a guitar pick engraved with my signature on one side and the Atom symbol that graces my signature guitars on the other side. And don't forget, two lucky people whose names will be pulled out of the digital hat will win the two original drawings that I created for the ear book. These have been framed and are now with Burning Shed. Plus, of course, you will all get 94 brand new super tracks to listen to and a beautiful earbook to absorb and enjoy. Oh, and definitely kick that eBay scammer into touch. There will be more than enough copies available through Burning Shed. Absolutely no reason at all to fall for such an obvious trick. Why pay £120 for something you can easily buy for far less from the official source? I guarantee no one will miss out and all orders will be fulfilled.😉51
