- Ripping YarnsIn World Outside The Window·17 March 2025Written by Michael Palin and Terry Jones, a pilot and eight subsequent episodes, spanning two series transmitted on BBC 2 between 1976 & 1979....A massive favourite of mine at the time, but for some strange reason, not watched it for donkey's years....Randomly decided to watch an episode tonight, to see how it had stood the test of time. So chose episode 1, series 1, "The Testing of Eric Olthwaite" – 27 September 1977, which just happens to have a Yorkshire setting. Delighted to say it's still absolutely brilliant and I'm now going to buy the boxset....Here's that episode. I can't imagine too many wont remember it from the first time around, but if you've not seen it before, or not seen it in a long time like me, stop polishing the reinforced brass handle of your Spear & Jackson number 3 shovel, make yourself a nice black pudding door-step sandwich, put the cat out, let the lurcher in and do yourself a favour. You could do far worse with a spare half hour, even if it is raining. I'll never forget that gig, one of my favourites (top 10) of all the bands I've ever seen, and that's a lot! I'm a big fan of Bend Sinister, a bit of a masterpiece imho. A more controlled approach and probably one of their more accessible offerings. Great stuff.22

Eric Olthwaite could’ve become a spinoff. It’s dreamy to behold is Denley Moor. According to Wikipedia, the filming locations scenes were filmed at Beamish, Sacriston, Tow Law, and High Force, all in County Durham. The good people of Denley Moor remind me something of the good people of Trumpton.18
