- CLIVE JAMES: AN APPRECIATION FROM BILL.In William's World·27 November 2019Many years ago, in the1970s, I bought an album by Pete Atkin. I think I'd heard it on John Peel's BBC radio show, a programme which, since the 1960s, had regularly introduced me to lots of interesting and obscure music. The album was titled, (if I remember correctly,) 'A King At Nightfall,' and what struck me the most about it was the lyrics, which were witty, wise and poetic. At first I didn't realise that the lyrics were not written by singer/guitarist Pete Atkin, whose name was emblazoned on the album's cover. But I soon discovered that these wonderful lyrics were written by a man called Clive James. Clive went on to become a celebrity in his own right...a poet, television broadcaster and critic whose wit and wisdom illuminated many a tv show. Clive seemed like one of the good guys, a really good guy who appeared honest, stoic and compassionate about events unfolding around him. Clive James's way with words encompassed both humour and profoundity, a man who clearly felt deeply about the human condition, its contradictions, pathos, absurdity, comedy, joy and sadness. This was particularly in evidence in his latter poems, written when he was diagnosed as terminally ill. Today, his death was officially announced. I feel very sad about his passing. This troubled, divided country needs more of his kind to pour a healing salve on our increasingly bitter divisions, but I fear there is no one to replace him or those like him. Rest in Peace Clive...45302

- About the David Bowie rumoursIn William's World·29 April 2022As I'm sure we all know, Bill Nelson's album 'After the Satellite Sings' was influential to David Bowie's earthling album. But I've also heard rumor's about Bowie's past. Among those are rumors that Bowie (allegedly) was going to work with the legendary Bill Nelson (of Be Bop Deluxe fame) on music. Is there any credibility to these allegations? If so, during what time would they have worked together, and what would it have been like?1131309

- Eagerly awaiting Dazzlebox! In William's World·23 March 2021Even after 45 years of following Bill and buying everything he puts out as it’s released, I’m both a bit surprised as well as being reassured by the feelings of anticipation & excitement I find myself experiencing at the prospect of getting my hands on this set of recordings. 2 CD’s packed with relatively newly recorded & mastered instrumentals, fantastic packaging and wonderful artwork; surely this has to be a no brainer for anyone who’s interested in the man and his amazing sonic adventures. It’s like waiting for Live! In the Air Age to hit the shelves of my local Virgin Records or HMV store back in ’77. But I can’t wait, I want it, no, more than ever - I need it NOW (or more politely, as soon as you can, please Bill?)!!52172

- MOJO October 2022 ''Sound On Sound'' InterviewIn William's World17 August 2022Only today picked up a copy of Mojo and not had time to read the entire piece yet, but I glanced at the closing words, (always a good way to get a feel for the whole article,) and read John Leckie's comment that 'all Bill needs is an editor.' Well, as much as I love John, I'll respectfully take issue with that comment, and for the following reasons: It implies that some kind of 'quality control' is needed, that some of the work is not as good as it could be. But, who is to say what is good and what isn't? What one editor might erase a different editor might keep. What one editor might think 'sub standard' another editor might deem essential and perfect. It just comes down to personal taste and musical bias, there are no absolutes in art. If an editor favours classic rock, he may not be particularly disposed towards jazz or ambient or avant music and would therefore edit in favour of the former. It''s entirely subjective. and avoids generalisations. I can understand that, if you're chasing commercial success, and an editor thinks he knows what formulas might help achieve such results, he will probably edit out anything that negates a potential success. That's what many producers are hired to do, to make hits, to aim at mainstream success, that's how they earn their money after all. But an artist doesn''t consider such things, he is dedicated to following the muse and damn the torpedoes. He has to do what he has to do. Editors are valuable for magazines and tv documentaries and so on, where numerous contributers are involved in producing the final product, (though they don't always get it right.) But a true artist and an editor are polar opposites. It becomes an imposition, a vendetta, a negation of vison and mission. An artist needs the opposite: the freedom to express whatever he wants, whenever he wants. You don't have to like it, or agree with it, but it has the right to be what it is. It's unbounded, boundless, free... By the way, don't think for one minute that the fact that I'm a prolific musician means that any of this music comes easy to me. It's an absolute joy to create it, and I love the process, but its creation requires intensely hard work, deep thought and great and loving care. 😉52

- Record Store Day - a new Bill vinyl? In William's World·29 January 2023I can't be the only noticing the resurgence in vinyl sales. I believe they overtook CD sales last year for the first time in eons. My lad got a new amp, speakers and turntable for Christmas and his interest in vinyl has reignited my own. I have always preferred physical product over downloads and streaming and enjoying even more time with my lad sifting through record stores has alerted me more to the "Record Store Day" movement and special releases. To cut to the chase, and i don't know the economics of short run vinyl printing, but I wondered how viable it might be for Bill to release a special record? Maybe a 4 or 6 track EP on a 12" or, to really stand out, a 10" record. Just a thought. Maybe too costly but I notice new vinyl releases tend to be priced circa £25 to £30 and some seem to be short volume runs of maybe 1,000 copies.52473
- BARON WOLMAN RIP.In William's World·13 December 2020Only now read of the death of legendary photographer Baron Wolman. Baron photographed virtually every major rock star in the 'sixties when he was Rolling Stone magazine's chief photographer. His iconic photographs of Jimi Hendrix, The Who, Janis Joplin, The Doors, Miles Davis, Frank Zappa and so many others are highly regarded classics. He was Rolling Stone magazine's official photographer at the famous Woodstock Festival too. A few years back, when I was invited to be a guest at Classic Rock magazine's annual awards ceremony, the magazine arranged for me to be seated at a table next to Baron who turned out to be a charming and erudite man, an ideal companion and conversationalist throughout the evening. His stories of photographing so many stellar musicians were fascinating. It was a privilege to be in his company for a few hours. Baron Wolman passed away on the 2nd of November due to complications from Motor Neurone disease. My sympathies to his family and loved ones. And yes, yet another cruel blow from this cruellest of years...52254
