Well said, Bill. I never understand those “[insert artist here] needs an editor” comments. Those sorts of opinions seem like shorthand for “I can’t keep up, so they should slow down.” Another artist I’m a big fan of, Robert Pollard (leader of the band Guided By Voices), often elicits similar reactions for his prolific output. I’d much rather let the artist have free reign to create what (and how much) they want—you don’t have to like all of it, but the more there is to choose from the better! A smaller body of work may be easier to grasp, but you lose the sense of discovery that makes big discographies like yours and Pollard’s so much fun to explore. (I admit that I like being challenged as a listener, though, and I understand that’s not how everyone approaches music—or art in general.)
