This week I have just got my old turntable (Walker CJ55) set up once again after a looooong pause (about 15 years). New Ortofon cartridge and a Cambridge Audio pre-amp, and it's a very pleasing sound. The ritual of cleaning the disc, placing the arm and dropping the needle in the (approximately...) right place is very relaxing. Although I won't be going away from buying CDs and downloads. Anyhow, further joy when a friend sent a link to Cherry Red who are releasing a new pressing of Sunburst Finish in April. Cherry (Red) on the cake... 😎

Mr Mercury, just had a listen (on headphones) to the 2 versions of Furniture Music, and to these ears the remix has a more "expansive" soundstage with the sequenced synth spread more over the right & left channels compared to the denser sounding remaster. Maybe that's what you're picking up on?

Pre-ordered. Now just to fire up the timemachine, zoom to the future to collect the CDs and return to the present, that's possible these days, no?... 😉

Hello John H, I was about to gently correct you but I see Jon W has shed some light 😄. I totally agree about the 4 songs being very complimentary, almost an entity in their own right. And that's part of the joy of Bill being so prolific, we can mix and match to create our own Bill albums with relative ease.

I've been using the Bose Quietcomfort 35ii headphones for the past 3 years and I'm pretty pleased with them. Noise reduction works well (adaptable level), back in the quaint old days of long haul flights they blocked a lot of the aircraft noise out without having to have the volume too loud, and I also used them without any input just to create my own quiet bubble. Battery life is good. They have Bluetooth but I generally use them with a cable connection straight to my amp/player. I don't bother with the Alexa/Google assistant stuff built in. Regarding your hifi, Palladium, there are plenty of Bluetooth transmitters which are designed to connect to your amp via traditional phono leads and/or headphone sockets.

That's an interesting point, just looked at the last few CDs I've purchased recently and the majority are in cardboard packaging (Paul Weller; Tom Petty; Public Service Broadcasting; Big Big Train; Kate Rusby). The Tom Petty is a 4 disc set and the package is more like a book. Is it that it's cheaper to produce them rather than using the plastic jewel cases, or is it an attempt to hark back to the days of LPs and the value that was associated with LP sleeves (their tactile nature, the complexity of some of the designs, art work you can actually see, words you can actually read - I appreciate this may be an age related thing!)? For one, well I like the card sleeves
