I was doing a take-off of Wes Montgomery going classical when all of a sudden the Cult shows up. What are the odds of a jazz man meeting a band like the Cult? This is a campy piece.

I was thinking of dedicating this to Pat. But there is a campy quality to this piece. It's superficial, and yet there is an intensity to the superficiality which makes its own superficially very deep. It's like visual artwork that comes across as trying to be clever. It is seen as superficial and is dismissed were it not for some other redeeming aspects. That's the ambiguity of camp -- it accomplishes what it wants to destroy, but in some measure raises itself up to the status of that enemy.
Have I raised this up to the status of what I was trying to destroy? Yes, I believe I have. I say that is all modesty. If I have done that, then that takes away from jazz and could never be offered to a jazz man like Pat Martino.
Rather think of this as Count Vlad goes Cultic.
