When I left Ings Road school, I enrolled for the entrance exam for Wakefield Art School. Work had to be submitted and a written exam was required of every aspirant. The exam took place, not at the Art cSchool but in an old building on Brook Street. This building had a lot of history going back to Elizabethan times. It had originally been the Wakefield Cathedral Grammar School, though that establishment had long since moved to much larger premises in Northgate. The old Grammar school in Brook Street was, (in the '60s,) used as an annexe for Wakefields Technical College and Art School, hence the entrance exam being held there. I was rather nervous sitting the exam but I passed and became an art student. The majority of the work we did was at the main art school building but we occasionally went to certain classes at the old grammar school building on Brook street too. A little later, a music club/venue was started by some art students in the cellars of the Brook Street building. I was amongst those students and helped to paint one of the cellar walls with a large pop art mural. A band I had at that time, (maybe 'The Midnite Kreepers,') were to play at the opening night of the venue. It was at the afternoon sound check and rehearsal that I received an electric shock due to faulty and wet wiring in the walls of the cellar. I was knocked unconscious and fell from the small makeshift stage and landed on my Gibson 345 guitar, snapping the neck off. I've told this story before so won't go into all the details but I was very lucky not to have been killed, (though it was not so lucky for my guitar.) Anyway, here's a photo' of the side of the building taken when it was in a terrible state of repair in the 1970s. Those large leaded windows were looking out from the room where the art school entrance exam was conducted. The cellar windows can be glimpsed beneath and that's where my electric shock and broken guitar happened.. Today, the building has been restored and is now known as the Elizabethan Gallery. The second photo' shows the front elevation in its restored form.

I wonder if any of our more senior members remember these small plastic divers and the submarines that were given away free in packets of breakfast cereal in the 1950s? I had both items though I can't recall what the cereals were that gave them as free gifts. These things were hidden in the midst of a packet of cornflakes and you were supposed to wait until they were all eaten before you could free the little toys from their confines, but, of course, we never waited. We immediately emptied the entire contents of the packet into a bowl and grabbed the toys! These little divers, (and the submarine,) could be made to dive and rise in an old pop bottle filled with water by tightening or loosening the bottle's cap. I vividly remember having some of these when I was at St John's Junior School in Wakefield in the '50s.
