- Bandcamp Friday requestIn William's World1 April 2022@Pete - Glad you're filling some of the gaps with the Bandcamp releases. Sorry the last few have been unnecessary for your collection, obviously you can't please everyone! There are plenty more titles to add to Bandcamp yet although it isn't a quick and easy process, a lot of work goes into preparing the albums for the digital treatment, so you may have to be patient waiting for specific albums. The albums you mention will all get the Bandcamp treatment at some point in the future EXCEPT 'Blue Moons and Laughing Guitars' which is owned by Virgin, so unfortunately Bill doesn't have the rights to release that album.31

- Paul Simpson’s memoir Revolutionary SpiritIn William's World·3 March 2024Just finished this fabulous book about life in the Liverpool scene in the late 70's early 80's and Bill and Be Bop are name dropped quite a bit. He has a very comical literary style worthy of Bill's pedigree. Recommended reading! 😀31158

- BillsIn William's World·7 January 2021A couple of days ago, my wife tentatively asked whether we could have a bit less Bill! She even unleashed the dreaded 'Overbill' word! Since then, covid has been so dreadful, i've not been able to listen to anything at all. Today, however, i've started on the complete William Schuman symphonies & i'm totally hooked - going to rotate nos 3,4,5 & 9 tomorrow & at some point sneak in Old Haunts, which i've not heard yet.31116

- WILLIAM'S WONDERFUL WORLD OF GUITARS. (A personal series of six string sentiments...)In William's World11 June 2020HERE'S AN OLD PHOTOGRAPH FROM THE EARLY 1960s I FOUND ON THE INTERNET. IT'S APPARENTLY OF A GUITAR PLAYER FROM DONCASTER CALLED KENNETH IVESON WHO I PRESAUME WAS ONE OF THE THOUSANDS OF YOUNG GUITARISTS WHO PLAYED FOR FUN AND NEVER MADE IT TO THE PROFESSIONAL STAGE. BUT WHAT I LIKE ABOUT THESE TYPE OF OLD PHOTO'S IS SEEING THE GUITARS AND AMPLIFIERS WE WERE ALL USING AT THAT TIME, ESPECIALLY IF WE RELIED ON PARENTS TO BUY THEM FOR US. IN THIS PHOTO' KENNETH IS HOLDING A HOFNER SOLID AND TWIDDLING THE CONTROLS ON A WATKINS COPYCAT ECHO UNIT PLUGGED INTO A WATKINS DOMINATOR AMPLIFIER. AND ALL IN WHAT LOOKS LIKE HIS MUM'S BACK GARDEN...31

- Quit Dreaming - your Xmas present sortedIn William's World23 August 2024Very pumped about this, even though I knew it was coming. But the track listing is generous and more than I could have hoped for. I'm also excited that this probably, almost assuredly, means we'll get "The Love That Wirls" next. I imagine that will include "Savage Gestures" among the many bonus tracks, since I think most if not all of those instrumental tracks hailed from the "Whirls" recording sessions, but it makes me wonder if "Chimera" will get lost in the shuffle. It was the third release of the 2005 Mercury reissue CDs but is only an EP so I can't imagine it getting its own boxset.31

- The Invisible GirlsIn William's World31 October 2024Does anybody know if Bill played on Valley of the Lost Women? The guitar at the end sounds a lot like him. The version I have is live, off a compilation, but may be the same version as on Disguise in Love.3
- Tingalary ManIn William's World11 June 2024There used to be quite a popular saying around this neck of the woods, a good few years back, .."I'm talking to the organ grinder, not the monkey"...and, various iterations of...no explanation necessary. Don't hear it very often, nowadays...always made me smile, it took no prisoners.😁31
- Non-LP tracks circa Red Noise > ChimeraIn William's World14 July 2024I've attempted a more objective/evidenced chronology... Sorting Solo Bill Nelson 1979-1985 * This is an esoteric document, neither a sessionography nor a discography - but rather a mixture of the two. * The goal is to establish a chronology for all the known songs of this period - which is impossible, because recording dates aren’t known for many of them, and release dates may or may not reflect the recentness of the compositions/recordings. * So, I have logged songs by the earliest date that I can determine they existed - recording session dates, when that information is available, and initial release date, when that’s all we know for sure. (Kid Jensen sessions are ambiguous, since they used home recordings. If any of them were live sessions, I can’t find that information.) * At the very least, this is an objective baseline for pondering further refinement of chronology, using our ears. * Please alert me to errors and omissions. 1978 (and early 1979) Final Red Noise recordings, plus earlier b-sides. Included here because two tracks first appeared on solo BN singles: * Instantly Yours * Wonder Toys that Last Forever * Ideal Homes * Acquitted by Mirrors * (Disposable, included on Quit Dreaming) 1979 February-June Quit Dreaming recorded with John Leckie and the Mobile Unit. I suspect that February is covering Disposable, which was played by Red Noise, still active at that time. * Album tracks * White Sound * Mr. Magnetism Himself * Atom Man Loves Radium Girl 1980 November From Brussels with Love compilation released: * The Shadow Garden (would later appear on Ritual Echo) 1981 February Single released: * Rooms with Brittle Views * Dada Guitare 1981 February or March John Peel broadcast (home recordings): * Konnie Buys A Kodak * The Art Of Vision * Boom Year Ahead * Afterlife 1981 March-August Home recordings used as b-sides on Quit Dreaming singles: * Be My Dynamo * All My Wives Were Iron * Birds of Tin * Love in the Abstract * Turn to Fiction * Hers is a Lush Situation 1981 May * Quit Dreaming released * Sounding the Ritual Echo released 1981 May The Nottingham live tape includes Sleepcycle and several tracks with unknown titles. 1981 June Kid Jensen broadcast: * Rooms With Brittle Views * Stay Young * Sleep Cycle * Jazz (Richard Jobson vocals) 1981 “between spring and winter” The Love That Whirls Sessions: * Album tracks * Eros Arriving (single version) * Haunting in My Head * Flesh * He and Sleep Were Brothers * The Passion * The Burning Question * Five tracks that would eventually appear on “Savage Gestures for Charms Sake (released December 1983). 1981 November * Tony Goes to Tokyo released * Das Kabinett released (commissioned in early 1981) 1982 April ABM 1 released: * Konny Buys a Kodak * When the Birds Return * The Beat that Can’t Go Wrong Today 1982 June * The Love That Whirls released (see session, above, for related b-sides) * La Belle et la Bete released (recorded in early 1982) 1982 July Kid Jensen broadcast: * A Dip In The Swimming Pool Reactor * M1 (Still Under Construction) * Zen 1982 Autumn * Chimera recorded 1982 October ABM 2 released: * King of the Cowboys * Shadowland * Carnival * Spring 1982 November Single release (previously unreleased home recordings included on the Permanent Flame 7-inch box, issued separately in 1983): * Touch & Glow * Dancing in the Wind * Love without Fear 1983 January Kid Jensen broadcast of four tracks, three of which would appear on ABM 3, released May 1983: * Dancing on a Knife’s Edge * Indiscretion * Contemplation * Time Tracking 1983 February-March The Invisibility Exhibition live performances, featuring many tracks that would appear on Chamber of Dreams (released in early 1985), a few untitled numbers, and an instrumental version of Indiscretion. 1983 May Chimera released 1983 November ABM 4 released: * World and His Wife * Dream Car Romantics * Dancing Music 1983 December Savage Gestures for Charm’s Sake released. Five songs taken from TLTW sessions, one from earlier. 1984 May ABM 5 released: * Hard Facts from the Fiction Department * Daily Bells * Rhythm Unit * Junc Sculpture 1984 December ABM 6 released (“Giants of the Perpetual Wurlitzer”). * The Strangest Things, The Strangest Times * Phantom Gardens* * French Promenade * Golden Mile * West Deep* * Threnodia* * Later re-released on Chance Encounters. 1985 January Trial by Intimacy released 1985 February Two-Fold Aspect of Everything Released 1985 June Sex, Psyche, Etc. 12-inch released (Orchestra Arcana)31
- Non-LP tracks circa Red Noise > ChimeraIn William's World13 July 2024Ed, thanks for that lead on the Kid Jenson material (15 January, 1983)! This definitely warrants some corrections to the list/groupings. The date makes sense, as an instrumental version of "Indiscretion" featured in the February-March 1983 Invisibility Exhibition shows. I'd never heard of (let alone heard) "Time Tracking," so you've just given me a new song to listen to. Wild.3
- Non-LP tracks circa Red Noise > ChimeraIn William's World13 July 2024Don't underestimate what you've managed so far. You're into a new way of listing this stuff, I think. If there is a BN scholar who has all of it listed or in their heads already, they should join in the conversation. I know some of the sessions were made up of the 'final' versions of the songs but I had always assumed that some were recorded as separate versions of songs for which Bill also had 'his own' (home-recorded) version. As an example, there's a later, live session Bill did for the 'Hit the North' show on Radio 5 (BBC) that was nothing but fresh and live takes, using backing tapes. It's very possible that you are right though and all the sessions from the time period in question are made up of songs that have only one version each. Oh, this is getting quite complicated, isn't it?3

- "Two-Fold Aspect of Everything" download: Remastered? In William's World20 January 2025The down side of Bill’s ‘Cottage Industry’ releases is that they don’t ever get into the record shops, and subsequently don’t end up in the ‘reduced to clear’ bins of days gone past. I wonder how many people have bought one of those bargain records purely because they like the sound of the title, or the front cover, only to become fans of the music? With very limited pressings of the CDs, and being distributed solely by Burning Shed, the chances of someone stumbling on a cheap album and buying it on a whim are pretty slim.3

- Be Bop Deluxe "Futurama" RSD Blue Vinyl ReissueIn William's World2 May 2024I may be in the minority but I don't like the new mix. It's quieter, flatter, smoother...none of which I want. In particular, on the epic fade out on Sound Track (one of my favorite tunes), the left channel guitar riff is pretty much missing. It ruins the song. I checked the "2019 Stereo Mix" on iTunes - same problem. I'm sticking with my original pressing.31
