THIS IS A RARE, (AND POSSIBLY ORIGINAL,) D'ANGELICO 'TEARDROP' ARCHTOP. THE COMPANY THAT NOW HOLDS THE D'ANGELICO NAME AND MANUFACTURES GUITARS IN KOREA DID, BRIEFLY, REPRODUCE THE 'TEARDROP' AS A CUSTOM-MADE, BUILT IN THE USA MODEL. I'M NOT SURE HOW MUCH IT COST. IT WAS IN A GORGEOUS BLUEBURST FINISH AND I UNDERSTAND THAT IT SOLD IMMEDIATELY TO SOME WELL-HEELED COLLECTOR.

I haven't heard this is years. I can remember cruising thru Santa Clara (Ca.) playing this on the cassette player in the car. This, UFO and BoC were in heavy rotation back then.

AS MONTY PYTHON USED TO SAY, "AND NOW FOR SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT..." WANDRE GUITARS WERE MADE IN THE 1960s AND DESIGNED BY ARTIST WANDRE PIOLI. THEY WERE HIGHLY UNUSUAL INSTRUMENTS, SOMETIMES MADE USING PLASTIC BODIES, METAL NECKS AND CHASSIS AS WELL AS MORE OTHODOX WOODWORK. THEY ARE NOW RARE AND EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE COLLECTOR'S PIECES THOUGH WHEN THEY FIRST APPEARED IN THE '60s WERE CONSIDERED TOO OUTRE FOR MOST GUITARIST'S TASTED. HERE ARE SEVERAL EXAMPLES OF WANDRE GUITARS.

ANOTHER NICE PHOTO' OF ONE OF MY ALL TIME HEROES AND INSPIRATIONS, WES MONTGOMERY. WES WAS A BIG INFLUENCE ON JIMI HENDRIX TOO, ESPECIALLY WITH HIS USE OF OCTAVE BASED LINES. WES AND JIMI, SADLY, BOTH DIED TOO YOUNG TO CONTINUE THEIR GUITAR VISIONS INTO OUR CURRENT TIMES.

AN ART DECO 'WING' GUITAR AMPLIFIER...

I wonder if anyone here remembers the Italian Meazzi company from the '60s? They are probably more well known for their echo units, but here is a pic of a guitar they made...

And it is anniversary time, again! .

'Kon Tiki' was one of my favourite Shadows tracks. I bought it as a single in the early '60s when I was a teenager and have memories of hearing it in my head as I walked down Conistone Crescent on Eastmoor Estate at that time, (where I lived with my parents.) It was a time when I was still finding my feet as a guitar player, and the instrumental music of the period was hugely influential on the work I would achieve much later in my professional career... Here's an image of the sheet music for 'Kon Tiki.'

Here we go, you want a bit strange? Dr. Frankenstein Ergo Wing. Mine, and a hell of a player despite some initial issues.

HERE'S LES PAUL SHOWING US 'THE LOG', THE ARCHTOP GUITAR IN WHICH HE PUT A SOLID PLANK OF WOOD IN THE CENTRE TO PROTOTYPE HIS PLAN FOR A SOLID BODY GUITAR. NO ONE COULD ACCEPT THE IDEA OF A 'PLANK' OF WOOD BEING USED AS A GUITAR BODY AT FIRST, SO THIS IS WHY HE INCORPORATED THE IDEA INTO AN ADAPTED ARCHTOP, TO MAKE IT MORE ACCEPTABLE. LATER ON, OF COURSE, THE LES PAUL MODEL MADE THE CONCEPT OF A SOLID BODY GUITAR VIABLE, AND THE REST IS HISTORY.
