- A Bill Nelson MiscellanyIn William's World18 May 2020THE BIRTHPLACE OF BE BOP DELUXE... Here is a photograph I took some years ago of Primrose Hill Working Men's Club on Wakefield's ~Eastmoor Estate. It was in this club that, one afternoon, I first got together with Nick Dew, Rob Bryan, Ian Parkin and Richard Brown with a view to possibly forming a band. The club was managed at that time by Rob's father and so we were allowed to use the club's concert room to have a jam. The concert room was closed to members of the public that afternoon so we had the place to ourselves. Although we didn't yet have a nam, the jam session was positive enough for me to decide that we could take things further. From my notebook of song titles and group names, we eventually settled on Be Bop. Deluxe as an appropriate name for the band. Richard Brown, unfortunately, dropped out of the line up early on due to family pressures. A shame as he was a great keyboard player and someone who could have eventually been part of the later, more successful band line up. Primrose Hill WMC is now an ethnic food market and no longer used as a working men's club. But here's a photograph I took of it some years ago when it was still a WMC. This is how it looked at the formation of Be Bop Deluxe.25

- WILLIAM'S WONDERFUL WORLD OF GUITARS. (A personal series of six string sentiments...)In William's World17 June 2020THESE GUITARS WERE MADE BY MOSRITE FOR THE '60s AMERICAN PSYCH-POP BAND 'STRAWBERRY ALARM CLOCK.' THEIR ALBUM WAS ONE OF THE FIRST AMERICAN 'UNDERGROUND' IMPORT ALBUMS I EVER BOUGHT FROM 'THE RECORD BAR' SHOP IN WAKEFIELD, BACK IN THE DAY. THEIR SONG 'INCENSE AND PEPPERMINTS' WAS A PSYCHEDELIC CLASSIC THAT JOHN PEEL WOULD OFTEN SPIN ON HIS RADIO SHOW.32

- WILLIAM'S WONDERFUL WORLD OF GUITARS. (A personal series of six string sentiments...)In William's World18 November 2021A rather poor quality photograph I found on the internet of me playing a guitar I'd virtually forgotten about, back in the early Be Bop Deluxe days. It's a Hayman guitar which I'd bought from The Wakefield Music Centre in the early '70s. It wasn't a bad guitar, though rather unappealing to look at and I now wonder what drew me to it, being so attracted by fabulous looking instruments, but perhaps in those days I wasn't so concerned by aesthetics...32

- WILLIAM'S WONDERFUL WORLD OF GUITARS. (A personal series of six string sentiments...)In William's World24 January 2021Here's an oddity I think I may have commented on before: The late, great Roy Orbison with his Gretsch-Gibson hybrid guitar. The body appears to be a variation on a Gretsch Country Club model, but in black rather than the usual Cadillac Green, and, from the look of those four switches on the top bout, is equipped with the rare Gretsch stereo wired pickup configuration, (though the neck pickup appears to be a Gibson P-90 rather than a Gretsch Filtertron.) The neck itself however, is clearly a Gibson one, similar to those found on other Gibson archtops at the time. (The headstock design is a dead giveaway too.) Whether this guitar was a custom order from Gretsch or an aftermarket luthier modified job, I have no idea. But it's a totally unique instrument. If anyone out there knows the story, I'd be interested to read it.32
