- WILLIAM'S WONDERFUL WORLD OF GUITARS. (A personal series of six string sentiments...)In William's World28 June 2020AN EARLY BRITISH ROCK N' ROLLER WHO SOMETIMES SEEMS TO GET A LITTLE BIT OVERLOOKED IS JOE BROWN. HE'S ALWAYS BEEN A VERY GOOD GUITARIST BUT PROBABLY MORE WELL KNOWN FOR HIS 'CHEEKY CHAPPIE' SONGS WHICH WERE BIG HITS BACK IN THE DAY. I REMEMBER, WHEN I WAS A BOY AT INGS ROAD SECONDARY SCHOOL, COLLECTING BUBBLE GUM CARDS WHICH HAD PICTURES OF POP AND ROCK N' ROLL STARS OF THE DAY ON THEM. CLIFF RICHARD, MARTY WILDE, BILLY FURY, ETC. ONE OF THE CARDS CARRIED A PHOTO' OF JOE BROWN WITH A WHITE GRIMSHAW ELECTRIC GUITAR WHICH I THOUGHT LOOKED RATHER SPIFFING. GRIMSHAW GUITARS WERE MADE IN THE UK AND NOW COMMAND GOOD PRICES ON THE COLLECTOR'S MARKET DUE TO THEIR RARITY.. SO HERE'S A PHOTOGRAPH OF A YOUNG JOE BROWN WITH HIS GRIMSHAW GUITAR... AND HERE'S JOE IN MORE RECENT YEARS WITH A MAGNIFICENT GIBSON SWITCHMASTER ARCHTOP...BOTH ARE WEARING WELL!33

- Single Track of the DayIn World Outside The Window28 May 2024I was listening to Some Girls the other day. Here's one of my favorites from that album. When this album was released I was browsing in a record store, and picked it up. The one with the original cover. I decided to buy something else that day and come back for Some Girls the following week. By the time I returned to purchase it, they had pulled the original prints and replaced it with the alternate cover. 😯 So it goes. Before They Make Me Run (Remastered)3

- Bill Nelson Christmas AlbumIn William's World·18 December 2022In addition to the Christmas singles (free downloads), are there more Bill Nelson songs that directly reference the winter holidays or pick up on traditional holiday music? Also curious about how many songs (with lyrics) are set in wintery scenes, like "Frosty Lawns (Snowballs & Oranges)."33402
- Bill & The Pistols? In William's World·5 June 2022Reading the latest issue of Record Collector, I was surprised to find the excerpt below in the midst of their very large Sex Pistols feature. The interviews, by Johnny Sharp – with Jones, Cook and Matlock as a group and with Lydon unsurprisingly on his own – are a very good read anyway, but this brief bit of back story really got me thinking. If, in 1976, the Pistols’ 20-year-old drummer had enough awareness of Bill’s first production roles on BBD albums and was enough of a BBD/Bill fan to suggest him as a suitable producer for the Anarchy single – and beyond? – what does this say about how Bill was viewed amongst fellow musicians (rather than just by the ‘music industry’)? This is at very least a link I wouldn’t have imagined. Whenever we get to see the surprising number of photos of Bill with the big names of the seventies and eighties – almost always the kind of people that brought some thought and depth to their mega-success (Annie Lennox, Japan, etc.) – I wonder what their view was (and is) of Bill. Am I wrong in thinking that quite a few of them (Billy MacKenzie is a fair example) were not just finding Bill to be good company but actually looking up to him? Clearly, that’s what Paul Cook was doing when he made his suggestions to the Pistols. He clearly indicates that he wanted a ‘proper’ producer, unlike the way other ‘punk’ contemporaries were going. Is the Sex Pistols ‘almost-link’ something that Bill was aware of? What a weird career twist that would have been! Here’s the piece from Record Collector… When you made the Anarchy single, how much did Chris Thomas’ production bring to the band in the studio? Steve Jones: Prior to that we had our sound guy, Dave Goodman, and it all went to his head when we got a deal with EMI. …. He was smoking way too much weed. I’m not kidding – 100 takes and it still wasn’t good enough. …. Then Chris Thomas came along and- boom! We had it in three takes. Because he knew what he was doing. Glen Matlock: It didn’t work with Dave Goodman because Malcolm was in the studio with him, and Dave wasn’t in a position to tell him to shut the f*** up. … And we kind of went on strike. We said, look it’s not working out. We’ve got to find another way. And Paul (Cook) came up with a couple of suggestions: Bill Nelson from Be Bop Deluxe and Chris Thomas. I didn’t even know what a record producer was at that time. Paul Cook: It was such a great stroke getting Chris involved because at that time …. bands [were just] getting their mates in to engineer like The Clash did with their soundman, Mickey Foote.33367

- And We Fell Into A DreamIn William's World·26 January 2023It's been a while since I have posted here, in fact it's been a while since I last dug out a Bill CD and REALLY listened to it . I have been taking a deep dive into (slightly) strange worlds. Sun Ra, Peter Brotzmann, Art Ensemble of Chicago being current favourites. Decided to come up for air and dig out a fairly old Bill classic this afternoon, and fell back under his musical spell. Perfect listening for a chilled out afternoon of reading and relaxing. It's good to be back ☺️ btw I'm still fully up to date with the releases I just need time to listen to them all!33261
- BowieIn World Outside The Window16 April 2021Here's one more from Jackie mag '73.....a girl down the road from us wore eye make up like that at the time - she was called Marlene, and had a fur coat and massive cork heels - off to the Red Lion pub in our village of Blackrod, and then she'd be seen crawling home at midnight with holes in her tights and one shoe - she was class stuff that Marlene......33
- Bill Facebook pageIn William's World13 September 2023I'm not a member of Bill's Facebook group, so I know nothing about it, nor the WHAS group. But regarding this screen-capture you posted here Alec, on face value, all I can say is, well said Bill !!....You see what's happening in England/UK (and many other countries), lenghth and breadth, is that everything is being stripped away, amenities, buildings, services, shops, etc, etc, and basically being replaced with nothing, 'green-spaces' and plazas (what a joke), where once there were thriving shops, cinemas, businesses and the like for people to connect with on many levels = communities with a sense of identity and purpose...Everthing is being stripped away and dumned-down and we, the general public, are being told how great this is for us, from all kinds of sources, local counils, government, all those with a vested interest in this eradication...I think the comment from this WHAS chap Eric Brookes, "Amazing", sums up the level to which this whole situation has sunken to and the attitudes and arrogance and indifference towards it...No, it's not amazing. Not now. There's nothing there anymore. It used to bee amazing, but not any more. Stop trying to tell me a baron landscape, shopping streets full of nothingness, empty and soulless, is amazing.3

- WILLIAM'S WONDERFUL WORLD OF GUITARS. (A personal series of six string sentiments...)In William's World11 June 2020WHILST ON THE SUBJECT OF BE BOP DELIXE, HERE'S A PHOTO' OF THE AMPLIFIER RIG I USED WITH THE BAND. STARTING AT THE TOP OF THE SET UP, THERE'S AN HH TAPE ECHO UNIT, TWO SEPARATE 100 WATT CARLSBRO AMP HEADS AND NESTLING BETWEEN THEM IS A CUSTOM BUILT PRE-AMP BOX WHICH REPLICATED MY OLD WATKINS COPYCAT PREAMP. THEN BELOW ARE SIX SAE CISTOM BUILT SPEAKER CABS WITH 2X12" SPEAKERS IN EACH CAB. SO BASICALLY, I WAS PUSHING TWO HUNDERED WATTS INTO TWELVE SEPARATE 12" SPEAKERS. HMMMN...STILL CAN'T UNDERSTAND WHY ANDY CLARK ALWAYS COMPLAINED I WAS TOO LOUD! 😉😆 (BUT MAYBE THAT ACCOUNTS FOR ME BEING COMPLETELY DEAF IN ONE EAR TODAY....)33

- A Bill Nelson MiscellanyIn William's World26 September 2020Here's something else I found amongst my Mother's keepsakes. It's a personalised Christmas card containing a photograph of myself with a written message from my Mum. My parents must have had a few of these cards printed up to send to their friends one Christmas, probably in the same year that the photograph was taken...I guess I'd be four or five years old.33
