- The Last LamplighterIn William's World·19 September 2021It's an album I don't see mentioned too much here in Dreamsville..Jon, Alec, Steve and myself have given it praise, and that's ok to all the others that have not (and apologies to those that have, that I haven't mentioned)..it's all about personal connection. The reason I mention this?..well, my very favourite BN albums include Sailor Bill(#1), Golden Melodies, Stereo Star Maps, Dreamland To Starboard, Dazzlebox, Gleaming, Return To Jazz Of Lights, Rosewood(1), Mazda...I'd better leave it there, or there will be a list of 20, lol....But, I find myself going back to Lamplighter, time and time again. I'm listening right now...my family are all safely sleeping, I'm still up burning the candle, habit of a lifetime, understanding and forgiving woman in my life (I'm so lucky), totally relaxed, a few Jonnie Walker Green Labels, all's well with the world...at least until we watch the news tonight. Point is, the more I listen to this wonderful album, the more I fall in love with it...It's actually competing with Sailor Bill😲.....sometimes I think it might be my favourite Bill Nelson album. ...And!...any Be Bop fans that haven't jumped into Bill's solo recordings, well, that's fine too, but if you're looking for mind-blowingly fabulous guitar work, please try this album...Fantastically haunting, always touching the melancholy, reaching back to something we once knew, but definitely a firm message for the here and now!............gloriousness...It's superb!! Any thoughts???34176

- "Two-Fold Aspect of Everything" download: Remastered? In William's World20 January 2025Thanks for the clarity, as re: royalties and timing. My disappointment merely stems from over-excitement: I've wanted a remastered edition of this essential comp for 25 years or so, and I thought this was finally it. But I have the "Quit Dreaming" box set on pre-order, so more of my money is happily heading Bill's way. 🙂 I think if you look at the entry in the Store, rather than the Bandcamp link, you'll see that, at the top, it reads "retrospective 2LP collection - February 1985" and below that, under the artwork, is a very detailed tracklisting from the original LP. So that does give the appearance that this release is that one. Nowhere on the Store page does it clarify that the download is NOT that version, but rather the UK single disc edition. As I mentioned in my follow up, that becomes clear once you go to Bandcamp, though I do think it was reasonable to ask for clarity. Anyway, I"m grateful for your follow up.3

- A Bill Nelson MiscellanyIn William's World27 October 2020A photograph of my band, 'GLOBAL VILLAGE', posing in front of the van we owned in the 1960s when we were, without a doubt, the coolest band in Wakefield. At this point in time, I was still working as a Local Government Officer in a job I hated and in which I was encountering a lot of insults about the way I looked. It was a different era, a very conservative, unenlightened time, (at least in Wakefield,) but I 'flew my freak flag high' and the band became an escape from the drudgery of my day job. Incidentally, I painted the name of the band on the side of the van myself. We had a sign in the van's back window which read: 'Don't laugh Madam, your daughter might be inside.' At the time the photo' was taken, we had become a four piece band, though this wasn't to last long. We remained, essentially, a three piece 'power rock' trio. Left to right in this photo': Bill Nelson, Pete Bradley, Alan Quinn and Bryan Holden.34

- Bill's Work With YMOIn William's World·17 October 2019Hi Everybody! First time poster here! I am a huge fan of Bill's work with Yellow Magic Orchestra and Yukihiro Takahashi. I was wondering if anyone knew what equipment he was using in the studio and on tour with them. I know in videos he's using his green SG2000 but I don't see or at least can't make out what amps and effects he's using. There's one sound in particular I would like to know how he created it. It has very "E-Bow" like and it has a great overdriven, wide/chorus sound to it. Big Muff? Dimension D? JC-120? Any thoughts? I know he's listed as "Guitar/E-Bow" on Takahashi's "What Me Worry". Here are two great examples of the sound I'm talking about. YMO - "Focus" https://youtu.be/KlShy_5srEQ Yukihiro Takahashi - "Helpless" This is an amazing cover with great vocals from Bill. It sounds like he's using a vibrato bar here on some bends so maybe ES-345 or Strat? https://youtu.be/71HRxm09pg0 Here's a live video from the 1983 tour Bill played on with Takahashi but I swear some of the audio is just the album recordings and not just backing tracks with live instruments on top. https://youtu.be/NqjNPMcfI7k This one seems more "live". https://youtu.be/tXBnqBxQiYA Anyway let me know if you have any insight! Also does anyone know how Bill and YMO met and started working together? A lot of their work together happened around 1982-1984. Was it through David Sylvian or Steve Nye? For the record, I tried searching for this information in the forum but I couldn't seem to find what I was looking for. Cheers and Thanks, Spencer34786
- Haunting in my head ....In William's World·27 November 2019Old haunts is a masterpiece ... from first listen the whole album resonated with me ... the style the production the superb musicianship ... not one to compare but l hear hints of “golden melodies of tomorrow“ and “simplex” in the mix ... the songs have a complexity and simplicity to them ... it does demand an attentive listener and isn’t one to cherry pick... its ridiculous that one man can continue to create such beautiful music after all that has already gone before .... long live Bill Nelson ♥️34235

- MeIn World Outside The Window23 January 2023Well firstly, Pie's video is not a 'progressive-left' take on the situation back then. It is a view from the left, and is a satirical view, but certainly not progressive left...Whether you tag as progressive-left, has little relevance in the context of your comment. The comment you make here is a rather sneaky attempt to make me look like a hypocrite, or even a fool. However, this quote you are using, which I did make (obviously), is being used by you in a biased and loaded way, it 'fits' with what you are trying to achieve, but in truth, only paints half the picture of where I stand...read on. Here is my closing remark from a post I made on Jan. 12th (this year) on your "NHS is finished, say doctors" thread: Quote "Of course the government has lots to answer for, but it's not just a problem coming from the right." So yes, I stand by the comment I made re the Pie video and still think it was on the mark. You can clearly see that the recent comment I made on your other thread, is of a similar nature, saying that the current government has lots to answer for, proving I am still consistent with that viewpoint. I will call out accordingly, either left or right, as my comment then, re the right and my recent comment, re the right, shows...Would you agree with that?...It's there in black and white. There's nothing to make sense of, as I quoted, it's not just a problem coming from the right, and that comment/stance seems a balanced approach and perspective to me. You tried to use an old quote from me, in a manner designed to show me up. But as you can see, in my recent quote made on your thread, I am still critical of the Tory government, some 3 or 4 years on, something which you would be aware of (i.e. the actual comment), but have conveniently forgotten....This approach you have just employed, kind of proves one of the aspects I was pointing out in my above post = go figure it for yourself. You seem totally obsessed, to the point of fanaticism, with a completely biased viewpoint of everything being the fault of the 'hard-right'..period. As Orphan mentioned, you can't keep on with that kind of approach, without others making a point of counterbalance. My comments on the progressive-left, I stand by.....But as you can see, I am able to criticise the left, and the right, both 3 years ago, and today. Do you work in pairs?, who 'directed' you to the Pie thread...FFS.4

- WILLIAM'S WONDERFUL WORLD OF GUITARS. (A personal series of six string sentiments...)In William's World27 May 2020CAN'T RECALL WHAT MAKE THIS ACOUSTIC GUITAR WAS THAT I OWNED IN THE LATE '60s. IT MADE IT'S WAY ONTO THE 'NORTHERN DREAM' ALBUM. I THINK IT MIGHT HAVE BEEN AN ARIA. BUT THERE I AM, ALL THOSE YEARS AGO, PLAYING ON A LITTLE HILL THAT WAS PART OF THE LANDSCAPE OF A COAL MINE NEAR LUPSET ESTATE IN WAKEFIELD, NOW LONG GONE.. . THIS IS A PHOTOHRAPH OF MY GIRLFRIEND OF THE 1960'S, LYNNE HOLLIDAY, TAKEN IN THE FRONT GARDEN OF MY PARENT'S HOME AT 37 WOODHOUSE ROAD ON EASTMOOR ESTATE, WHERE WE LIVED AT THAT TIME, (HAVING MOVED FROM CONISTONE CRESCENT.) LYNNE IS HOLDING MY GIBSON 345 GUITAR IN ITS ORIGINAL SUNBURST FINISH AND WITH ITS PICKUP COVERS STILL IN PLACE. ALSO SPORTING ITS ORIGINAL MACHINE HEADS AND BEARING THE 'W. N.' GILT INITIALS ON THE SCRATCH PLATE THAT I'D APPLIED. (THERE ARE STILL MARKS ON THE SCRATCHPLATE TO THIS DAY THAT SHOW WHERE THE INITIALS ORIGINALLT WERE, THANKS TO THE GLUE THAT ATE INTO THE PLASTIC.). LATER, TOWARDS THE END OF THE 1970s, I HAD THE GUITAR REFINISHED IN A CHERRY RED SUNBURST AND REMOVED THE PICKUP COVERS TO EXPOSE THE COILS, A FASHIONABLE THING TO DO AT THAT TIME. BUT I'M PLEASED TO HAVE THIS OLD COLOUR PHOTOGRAPH OF IT IN ITS ORIGINAL STATE. HERE I AM AROUND 1972, PHOTGRAPHED IN THE LIVING ROOM OF 27, ANDERSON STREET, PLUMPTON, WAKEFIELD, THE FIRST HOUSE I EVER OWNED WHEN I WAS MARRIED TO MY FIRST WIFE SHIRLEY. I'M PLAYING A BEAUTIFUL WHITE GIBSON SG CUSTOM, WHICH WASN'T MINE BUT WHICH I'D BORROWED, THOUGH I CAN'T RECALL FROM WHERE. THIS MUST HAVE BEEN RIGHT AT THE VERY START OF PUTTING BE BOP DELUXE TOGETHER. THAT GUITAR WOULD NOW BE WORTH A FORTUNE! HERE I AM, PHOTOGRAPHED AT 'TWILIGHT PROPERTY' IN CLIIFE, NEAR SELBY, THE COTTAGE I BOUGHT WHEN I FIRST MARRIED MY SECOND WIFE JAN. THIS WAS MY ENTIRE GUITAR COLLECTION AT THAT TIME, A FRACTION OF WHAT IT IS NOW, THOUGH MANY OF THE GUITARS IN THIS PHOTO' HAVE LONG GONE.41
