- Quotes and ReflectionsIn World Outside The Window13 November 2021If you'll allow me the luxury of a "grumpy old geezer" observation, may I point out that most of the "quotes & reflections" above are nothing of the sort. They are basically phone memes. This tendency is spreading - it's a sure sign of neural malaise! Here's a real quote (from Umberto Eco's essay, Ur-Fascism): 'Fascist societies rhetorically cast their enemies as "at the same time too strong and too weak." On the one hand, fascists play up the power of certain disfavored elites to encourage in their followers a sense of grievance and humiliation. On the other hand, fascist leaders point to the decadence of those elites as proof of their ultimate feebleness in the face of an overwhelming popular will.' And here's my reflection on it: It sounds just like the way Fox News (etc) depicts its main enemy - ie generalised "liberals". As both too strong (establishment elite, liberal media in bed with Deep State, controlling everything, etc), and too weak (morally compromised by corporate ties and global interests, unpatriotic, too weak to implement radical right politicies, etc). You're welcome. 😁42

- Shorter length CDs?In William's World·17 May 2019I know that this may seem a little at odds with what we usually expect and now mostly get. I for one, would be in favour of shorter albums...probably of about 45 minutes playing time....actually the length that LPs used to be in the past. I feel that albums of this length are much more manageable for the listener to digest in one sitting. Listening for 70 minutes or over, can be a bit of a daunting proposition (and dare I say it, a tiring experience) When albums were of a shorter playing time, you really got to enjoy them and know them inside out. So, 'less' is sometimes 'more'. Also, an album of shorter length has the potentially to be much more powerful as a result...all killer, no filler as they say...what's not to like. It even benefits the artist in a way. Anybody agree ...or very much disagree? I'm hoping that some of you might actually agree! Ok, you can now shoot me down in flames if you don't agree ! :-)110280
- Your 10/10 albumsIn William's World·11 March 2019In my collection of albums I only have a few that I could give a 10/10 to. There are 2 items by Bill; Futurama & Drastic Plastic. There are lots of others by Bill and other artists that would score 9 or 9.5/10 as they are let down by one or two less than perfect tracks; (in my opinion). I ask the readers what their 10/10 albums are, which Bill albums are in their list and what other albums by other artists would score 10/10. My other artist 10/10s are the first Cars album, the second Cars album, (Candy-O), Beckett by Beckett, Ones and Sixes by Low, Spaces by Nils Frahm and Resolve by Poppy Ackroyd.110347
- Rupert Hine passesIn World Outside The Window·7 June 2020I’m placing this here, as I wanted to make sure you see this, Bill. Rupert Hine has passed. Another amazingly talented individual gone, leaving us just a little bit less well off. Prog Magazine noted it by re-running a 2015 article they’d run about Rupert. Wanted to call it out for a specific reason. Here is the article, and link to same: Outer Limits: Rupert Hine by Paul Lester (Prog) – July 31, 2015 Over the last 50 years, he’s worked with everyone from Camel to Chris de Burgh, he’s played a hit novelty single on Top Of The Pops and has even recorded with Doctor Who. But how prog is he? Rupert Hine is one of the few prog rockers – even one of the few at the outer limits of prog – to have had a five-decade career, a Top 5 novelty hit single, been in a band with an alternative comedian, and produced artists as wide-ranging as Camel and Rush, techno pioneers Underworld and Doctor Who Jon Pertwee. He’s earned accolades from Sir George Martin, and received comparisons to the maverick UK greats: Peter Hammill, Peter Gabriel, David Bowie, Bill Nelson, John Foxx and Kevin Ayers, to name but a few. “I remember buying his adventurous 1980s trilogy of albums at the time of their release,” reveals Tim Bowness. “I discovered him via an interview in Sounds, which compared his work to musicians I liked such as Peter Gabriel and Peter Hammill. At the time there were very few artists producing the sort of music Rupert and his engineer Stephen W Tayler were coming up with. The nearest comparisons were Gabriel’s 3 and 4, Hammill’s A Black Box, Kate Bush’s The Dreaming and, at a push, Bill Nelson’s Quit Dreaming And Get On The Beam.” He was a mid-60s mod, a late-60s hippie, an early-70s quirky glamster, a mid-70s prog jazz-rocker and an 80s avant-popster. He’s a regular musical Zelig. “Zelig? I like that,” says Hine of Woody Allen’s fictional character who morphed throughout history depending on the company he kept, and the context. He also likes Prog’s other catch-all term for him. “Eccentric British songcraft? That’s good too. more here .110411

- Look at the state we're in...In World Outside The Window16 January 2021American folks -- do you think Biden and the Democrats will be given a fair chance...or will there be a barrage of people trying to undermine them from the start? After all, there's no quick fix re: COVID and the damage to the economy isn't going to be repaired overnight. It's likely to get worse before it gets better.110

- WILLIAM'S WONDERFUL WORLD OF GUITARS. (A personal series of six string sentiments...)In William's World3 September 2020The interesting thing about this Switch Futura guitar isn't so much the front, though that's fairly striking, but how they have shaped the back. - YMO’s Yukihiro Takahashi Undergoes Surgery to Remove Brain TumourIn William's World·1 September 2020The Japanese music hero is currently recovering in hospital by Brock Thiessen | Exclaim Published Aug 31, 2020 Yellow Magic Orchestra legend Yukihiro Takahashi has revealed he underwent surgery to remove a brain tumour earlier this month. Via a written note on his website, the Japanese artist — who rose to fame playing alongside Ryuichi Sakamoto and Haruomi Hosono in YMO — made the reveal to fans earlier today, explaining that he had surgery on August 13. Currently, Takahashi is still in hospital recovering. However, he called the operation a success, stating, "The progress is going well." Apparently, Takahashi had been suffering from intermittent headaches since early this summer. While the musician initially thought these were due to migraines onset by the changing seasons, he eventually had an MRI when his symptoms failed to improve, revealing the headaches were the result of a brain tumour. Describing the moment when he learned of his diagnoses, Takahashi stated it was "a long day when he could not catch reality and was unable to speak in despair." With Takahashi now labelling the operation a success, the artist said he's found a new peace of mind and will now concentrate of his treatment. In his message, he also took time to thank the medical staff overseeing his treatment. "I want to try to stand before you as soon as possible," Takahashi said in his message to fans. You can read Takahashi's untranslated message below. more .27798

- Question for Count VladIn The World And His Wife·17 June 2022I've actually thought about this one or two times before and my question follows a similar train of thought, raised by drastic mark, a few posts back. Firstly, this is just a suggestion and I'm not trying to tell you what to do, but, why on earth don't you post all your new music posts into one dedicated thread?...You could for example, call it 'Vlad's Music Vault' and every new piece of music you post would go into that dedicated thread...Rather similar to wadcorps 'Potential Bill Nelson album covers' thread, that I regularly post in. This is just one thread, with over 1200 posts in it!, or Head Gardener's thread, just one thread, with 189 posts in it...Doing it this way keeps everything neat and tidy and concise and doesn't spam the whole forum, as your posts are doing. Basically, the first four pages of The World And His Wife are mostly all your posts/threads, and every time you make a new thread, it does push everything down one place and eventually pushes threads that don't get used too much right back to pages 4, 5, 6, whatever, where they have little chance of being viewed again, let alone having people interact with them. So as well as it keeping things orderly, it also show a respect, courtesy and consideration to other forum members who post here, or on any forum, just a common decency and doesn't dominate the board with one persons threads....Can you imagine if all the 'Potential Bill Nelson album covers' had all been separate threads, it would be ridiculous..In fact it would cover over 40 full pages on this forum...but as it is, it just takes up one nice, compact and concise thread, and as a result is so much easier and nicer to view...and of course your new total music thread and The Bill Nelson Album covers thread and Head Gardeners thread and other popular threads would all stay on the first page! Anyway, that's just a suggestion from me, it is purely just that, meant with no malice or anger, but just seems to make so much sense, so, all the best.27183

- IAN DURY & the BLOCKHEADSIn World Outside The Window·29 December 2023Been on a bit of an Ian Dury binge of late, wonderful stuff. I was getting a little 'stale' musically, if that's the right word, and a re-run through their back catalogue has really freshened things up on the listening front for me. A truly original band and front man, excellent musicians, wonderful writing and arrangements, a pure joy to listen to. I always loved Ian's voice and lyrics and let's not forget the very talented, and much underrated, Chaz Jankel, bit of a genius, really. So, if you're feeling a little wilted on the music front, why not try some Ian Dury & the Blockheads?, to put some lead back in your music pencil...works for me. Do It Yourself, a great place to start...highly recommended.😎 IAN DURY & the BLOCKHEADS ~ Inbetweenies Just to be clear, they're great to listen to at any time. The clever writing and arrangements and great musicianship, have ensured their songs have stood the test of time and don't sound dated...Any other fans here?27158
