@David I guess so... but the basis for that "taking back control" populism had already taken a knock, even before COVID - with the "deal or no deal" Brexit farce, and disillusionment from people in small businesses growing all the time. And now COVID has killed off any remaining rose-tint. Many fall for Johnson's buffoon act, of course, but I don't think there's anything like the cult-like adoration of the MAGA crowd to keep his popularity going. It just seems to me that the BBC, ITV, most newspapers, are mostly acting like a PR service for the corrupt clown.

The thing I want to hear most from all leaders is an acknowledgement that millions did not vote for them. Their job is to serve everyone, to find common ground and a common purpose, as far as possible. It is absolutely not their job or privilege to cause antagonism and widen divisions at every turn, as Trump did, and as our Brexit-supporting government has done. Biden seems to understand this. The infantile game of taking sides, and automatically hating anyone on the 'opposing team', must stop. The challenges we face are too serious. We need to accept good ideas and policies whichever side of the house they come from. There must be compromise.

As Fox News has spent the last four years or so seeing how far it could crawl up Trump's posterior, does this really surprise you?

I well remember my first business trip to the USA a little while ago. I was briefed about how I should talk to americans and concentrate on Europe rather than Britain. Perhaps I now know why. Now that Trump is going it's over to you Bidden. No doubt that Trump was distracted from the global threat of China by small fry and it's something that Bidden needs to address very, very quickly. That's how I'll be judging him. Whether it's economic sanctions, warning his EU buddies about cosying up to China or perhaps taking some stronger action it's up to him to get on with it for all of our sakes.

@David I'm asuming that you are based in the USA. I like a level playing field, so if people of an advanced age can run to be the most powerful person in the world then there shouldn't be complaints about those same people being arrested for breaking the law when protesting, as has happened in the UK. So the new President must be an exceptional person both physically and mentally to take on his new role, or being President must be an easy job. Like I said before, remember the decline of Reagan.

I don't know about in the USA, but I think that reading newspapers that only reflect your own polictical views is a bit sad and narrow minded. IDS is a Tory (Conservative), but I think he makes some good points here. He's also ex-military. Why aren't more people concerned about what China have done!!!
