The Conservatives have not only taken a staunch working class Labour heartland, but have sunk roots so deep now that it will take something monumental to reverse it. Mostly, it's down to brilliant spin -- selling some of the poorest people in the country the idea that the Conservatives are their best choice. And partly, it's down to Labour's abject failure at every level for many years.

A new report in The New Yorker claims the same thing is happening again, with a new massively popular mobile app utilised by Trump campaign: "It’s not unlike how Cambridge Analytica was able to harvest the data of nearly ninety million unsuspecting Facebook users, only this time it is one’s friends, family, and acquaintances who are willfully handing over the data". Also thinking back to 2000 election, when some people were telling me that Gore was really no different than Bush - worse even, because "at least Bush is open about what he really believes, unlike Gore". The same people now tell me that Trump really isn't so bad when you compare him to the awfulness of Bush!!

I'm not sure what you mean when you say "if people of an advanced age can run to be the most powerful person in the world then there shouldn't be complaints about those same people being arrested for breaking the law when protesting, as has happened in the UK". Perhaps I'm being slow on the uptake, but could you clarify, please, Roger? As for the new president being exceptional, I don't know. From what I've seen of him he seems completely lucid and far more logical and rational in articulating his thoughts [and understanding the current problems] than Trump [or Boris Johnson, for that matter]. I take your point about the potential risks of an elderly leader. But, again, DT is only three years younger and, as tlc says above, if we eliminate someone from running based on their age, the same criterion would have to apply to voting. Added to which, a younger age gives us no guarantee of stability or competence, unfortunately!
