Completely irrelevant, and missing the point by a mile - as is suggesting that background checks should be tied in with immigration controls. @Brett (formerly BFD) I understand that, and I know how hopeless the task must appear. But if you don't do anything, nothing will improve. Much stricter licensing, bans on certain types of weapons, amnesties, confiscations or buy-back schemes - all these can be done. And, as Bill said, education. Show people the real horror. Show them the victims of shootings. Show them how families and societies are shattered. Take kids out and let them see what happens to, say, an animal carcass when bullets rip into it. Treat it as a social problem or a health problem - just as Chicago and later Glasgow tackled knife violence. Would take years and years to change society. A struggle comparable to the civil rights movement. And every bit as worthwhile.
