In William's World
Tom Davis and I have created a rap song years ago, and I was wondering if Bill would care to play guitar on the back end of it. The song is about Thom Bell, producer, arranger, and one of the Stylistics. The lyrics are remarkably similar to Bill's musical attitude, and it is only now that I clued in on it. Check out the lyrics Bill. I have done this kind of long-distance recording before by swapping mp3s, so there is no expectation of you coming to Canada. Mind you, my invitation to come to Canada with your beautiful wife Emiko is still open. This song will give you a chance to pick up the guitar again. I read that you missed holding your guitar after your fall, and this would be an excellent form of convalescence and the perfect excuse to get back into playing again. And it is not a long part to play – just the tail end. I hope you take me up on this and if you want to discuss details, let me know through chat. Anyway, all the BEST and get better soon!

The vault of my musical past is yawning open with music and art on display. See what shadows come out of the crypt, and what shades Orpheus brings up from the House in the Underworld.

This is a song I produced back in the 80s while going to music school. It was from an all-girl band, except for the drummer and bass, called UKASE. This is their song Cosmic Kiss.

I especially like this version of Led Zeppelin. The movie dance footage is fantastic, and it aligns with the music without effort. Even small little hand gestures. In the boxing scene, I have a background picture of the cover of Led Zeppelin II and there is a woman there that I've always wondered who she is. There are theories, but my guess, and this is a very personal guess, is that she is Lucy Ball! Remember I Love Lucy. Anyway, the old man going in to see the women dance and leaving at the end with his wife, are great book ends. Also, the fight scene is amazing and aligns perfectly with the music and the solo out of Heartbreaker. Fighting and dancing are very much related. This is one video where fortune smiled at me.

Theatre of Orpheus was my one-man show at the London Music Club, in London, Ontario. I played guitar along with a soundtrack and a video light show projected behind me. Much of it was in the style of Bill Nelson and Nash the Slash. There were about seven to eight instrumental pieces, which I have posted here. The high point for me was that my parents and my brother attended. It was the last time they saw me play publically. My mother laughed at the cow chewing its cud in Steve Via's Holy Cow. I never would have expected that in a million years. The first time my parents saw me play was at the Governor Simcoe Hotel in a rock band called Bad News in 1977. Back then I was playing Elvis, Charlie Pride, Freddy Fender, Chuck Berry, and Steely Dan covers. I would never have dreamed to be playing originals. Nor would I have dreamed to put on a one-man show like Bill Nelson. For the record, the name Theatre of Orpheus was inspired by one of Bill's CD titles called Theatre of Falling Leaves. I thank Bill for that burst of inspiration. I probably will redo the guitar parts because many of them were roughly worked out, knowing that I'd be improvising when playing live. It was a great time and my son Riess' band Hobo Signs opened up for me. Maybe, I'll do it again sometime in the future.

This is another piece I performed at the Theatre of Orpheus show. It is basically a black and white psychedelic romp through the mind of Orson Welles. I have borrowed samples from Bill who borrowed them from the movie. What is pop music but thievery amongst thieves?

From the Theatre of Orpheus one-man show, the very first musical cartoon I've done. It took forever to do even in the age of computers.

This is from the Theatre of Orpheus one-man show. In it, I played the guitar to soundtrack tracks and had a light show behind me. It is much in the vein of Bill Nelson and Nash the Slash. This piece is an amalgam of sorts. The name is derived from Buckethead and his piece called Nottingham Lace. In all the Theatre of Orpheus music what you are seeing is the light show and original guitar track. Certain things I would now love to change. However, the solos were open to improvising and didn't exactly follow what you are hearing here.

Basically about the Slavic voice being heard through its religion. It's unfortunate that Ukraine and Russia are at war. They are Slavs first, nations second. They are brothers fighting against brothers. This piece tries to see the glorious whole with hints to Cocteau and his take on the Orpheus myth.

As they say, imitation is a form of flattery. I tried imitating Steve Vai's squirrelly guitar leads and came up with this piece. I had to create a context, so I chose religion… which I know he has a strong interest in. Voilà… this piece!

While in Santa Fe, New Mexico, a few years ago, I wrote this blues song. We were living in our RV, however, when showing the RV all that showed up was the dark and red vampyr thing. Our RV (the Big Kahuna) in the daylight. Living Room & Kitchen The guitar I used. This is Cardigan and Buttons our cats. We are planning to go to Nova Scotia this year and take our cats. Doreen is escape-proofing the RV, so we don't lose them. We have already had ghastly adventures with our cats getting out. Thank God they hung around the RV and didn't go far.

Richard Burton recites in this piece. I played this piece in a one-man show (Theatre of Orpheus) years ago. Little things I would change today: a part in the guitar solo is a little sloppy in its timing. Some photos seem a little kitch and cheesy. The big thing I would do with it today is to add a color tinge to the whole piece.

This is atmospheric in part and also a union of two instrumental pieces. The picture is my own drawing called Facade with a poem by D, who I used to be infatuated with in high school.

This is a piano rendition of a larger, more extensive work. The parts taken are like various scenes that illuminate the Ukrainian landscape. They are called Jazz from Kiev, The Cossacks, The Steppes, A Church, Tchaikovsky, and a return to Jazz. There is no cohesive unity to this work. One part flows into the next quite unexpectedly. It is quirky, dissonant, and volatile as the scenes go flitting by almost by accident.

I'm working out the bugs in this ELP song. They were at one thinking of adding George Harrison to the lineup, and then it would have been HELP. Which may have violated copyright laws because there is a Beatles' song called Help... hahah
