Ha, funny I was a kid when I heard/saw the Heaven and Hell album and my mom bought it for me (I was a Yes fan). It didn't make sense until several years later when I heard China and it all came together. Have been collecting anything with his stamp on it since then. We now have to live "after Vangelis" but with the many years of music since Forminx in the mid-sixties we have very little to complain about.
His music has been there our whole lives. I remember when I was a kid being blown away by the cover art for Heaven & Hell and having to have that LP and then as a teenager, Chariots of Fire was everywhere as was Blade Runner.
Somewhere allegedly there's a photograph of Andy Summers, Vangelis and Syd Barrett chatting at the UFO in London in the late '60s but I've never seen it.
Very sad news, he was a major influence on me. I was 18 years old and Christmas shopping in the Lincoln Mall with my girlfriend when I heard the most beautiful electronic music coming from the record store. The album was Albedo 0.39 and it was like nothing I'd ever heard. I've collected many of his recorded works over the years and enjoy them regularly. RIP Vangelis, your music lives on in the hearts and ears of your fans...
Sounds just like (it could have been) Pat Metheny on his Roland guitar synth around the same time, but I'm sure it's Vangelis on a keyboard?
Hearts of Space is running a 2nd program dedicated to the music of Vangelis. You can listen for free all day Sunday:

Sad to hear. I love his Blade Runner soundtrack.
