The Grind
Tommy Bolin
I walked all day tryin’ to find me work I must have knocked on one-hundred doors Would have swallowed my pride for some money And be satisfied sweepin’ the floors Mister Broken-Glass Mister Silver-And-Gold Mister Bustin’-My-Ass Mister All-You-Can-Hold…
I always thought “Mister Broken-Glass” was actually “Mister Foster Grants”.
.
From The Beatles 'Glass Onion' thought it was . . .
Looking trough the plate-glass julep
To see how the half live
Looking through a glass onion
Actually is . . .
Looking through the bent-backed tulips To see how the other half live Looking through a glass onion.
From Number 29 (External Youth) by John Entwistle . . .
Thought it was . . .
Don't be a spirit of the devil
Erected in the weather
Old age will seem to pass you by
But you won't dictate or sigh
With old Valentines
Over six feet but you look right trough the door
But it ended up being . . .
You'll be as virile as ever
Unaffected by the weather
Old age will seem to pass you by
And you won't detect a sign, of old Father Time
Over sixty but you'll look like thirty-four.
If I grow up I'll be a singer Wearing rings on every finger Not worrying what they or you say I'll live and love and maybe someday Who knows, baby, you may comfort me ...
from Old Brown Shoe - The Beatles
Heard it as ...
When I grow up I'll be a swinger
Oh, love is something you can't reject
No worry wart, maybe, you say
I'll live a lovely, baby, someday
Mojo finger, you can come for me ...
Whip It - DEVO
Crack that whip
Give the past the slip
Step on a crack
Break your mama's back
... I first heard it as ...
Crack that whip
Give the mask a slip
Step on a brick
Break your mama's back
Girl U Want - DEVO
She sings from somewhere you can't see She sits in the top of the greenest tree She sends out an aroma of undefined love It drips on down in a mist from above
... and I heard (first time I heard it) ...
She sits on someone you can see She sits in the top of the greenhouse tree She sends out an aroma of electrified love It drips on down in a mist from above
And we're sitting in a shaky lake
Or gliding over to a girl with a broken nose
Every day, every day ,ever day I ride the bus
misheard from Elvis Costello -Every Day I Write The Book
also Message in a Bottle byThe Police
A year has passed since I wrote my note
I always thought he was saying:
A year has passed since I broke my nose 😁
From KC & The Sunshine Band, Get Down Tonight, the line is ...
Baby, babe I meet you Same place, same time Where we can, oh, get together And ease up our mind
But I heard it as ...
Baby, babe I meet you Same place, same time Where we can all get together And Jesus on our mind
😇
The Beatles - Michelle Michelle, ma belle Sont des mots qui vont très bien ensemble Très bien ensemble ... As a kid I sang along with it as: Me shell, my bell Sunday morn Keep on, play piano and some Play piano some Then got The Beatles Illustrated Lyrics paperback, through the book club in school, excited not only by the lyrics but also by the Alan Aldridge cover art.
Felt my ears slowly going red as I read those Michelle lyrics. Later in life it dawned on me that the most common pronunciation of the name is the way Paul pronounces it here and not the way I pronounce it.
Killing Joke ~ Love Like Blood
Well of course it's that, I've always known that..It's one of my all time favourite songs from one of my all time favourite bands.
However, a friend once pointed out that it actually sounds like Jaz Coleman is singing "I laugh like Burt" in the chorus...give it a listen (and the song will probably never be the same again.)
'Till the fearless come and the act is done
I laugh like Burt, I laugh like Burt
'Till the fearless come and the act is done
I laugh like Burt, I laugh like Burt
Killing Joke were smoking hot in that era and I saw them a shit-load of times..
...and thank God for that..😁
Pulling Punches - David Sylvian
Nature feeds this nausea
Deep inside the heart of me
When I was a kid I used to think it was:
Nature feels this noisy earth
Deep inside the heart of you
... and from that same track
Simple lives spent partially breathing Are gathered together under new religion
I used to think it was:
Sheltered lives spent watching everything
All gather together under new religion
Leipzig – Thomas Dolby
Step through your steel front door frame “Dinner's in the microwave, sweetie” Leipzig is calling you Henry (on the cardboard thoroughfare) Leipzig is calling you Jane Leipzig is calling you Leonard (and the clouds run parallel) Leipzig is calling you names
I always thought the line was “Denizens of the microwave, sweetie”
