Ever since reading or rather listening to Patti Smith’s “Just Kids” memoir, read by the author, a few years back, I’ve come to associate Mary Quant with plastic macs and Syd Barrett.
Just Googled it...
‘Sandy had spent much time working in England, the London of Mary Quant, plastic raincoats and Syd Barrett. She had long nails and I marveled at her technique of lifting the arm of the record player so as not to damage her manicure.’
I agree, Alec. Mary not only helped create an iconic look of the period, but she also possessed it herself.
I have a copy of Just Kids, actually two copies as two different people gave them to me on Christmas that year. One hardback and one paperback. Would love to hear Patti read it herself, though. I always enjoy hearing her speak.
Good points, Alan. I enjoyed listening and I like the accent Ms. Smith’s got. Drawings are draw-lings. Burroughs is Burris. Stuff like that. Mary Quant, plastic macs and Syd Barrett as her summery of London when she visited was one of many moments that caused me to chuckle, rewind and listen again.
Thanks for the post, Alan. She had the perfect face and attitude for modernism.
I remember seeing "Quant By Quant" on someone's bookshelf once. It's a few ducats now ...
