Once upon a time, my mother made my older brother take me along with him to a Battle of the Bands dance at the Spokane Armory. That was the last thing a teenage boy wanted was to have his little brother in tow. They ditched me pretty quick and I went and watched the groups perform.
I want to say that The Wailers, The Kingsmen and the Sonics all played. If I remember correctly the whole thing was put on my KJR Seattle and they brought the Seattle / Tacoma bands across the state. That was back when AM Radio ruled the airwaves. It also was when bands had Saxaphone within the mix.
Maybe the song they all had in common was Louie, Louie. The Sonics wiped the floor with those other bands. What a short, brilliant career and certainly a highlight of my misspent youth.
I want to say the inspiration for the song was the Spanish Castle in Federal Way - a huge dance club. The same Spanish Castle that Seattle Native Jimi Hendrix wrote about.
