There've been many great 7 inch single flipsides over the years (and 12 inch...and 10....and EPs)….sometimes just lost in the shadow of the main song, and often quite obscure as a result...………..
...and here's a cracker from 1979, a great piece of fun from Spizz!
Spizzenergi ~ 'Virginia Plain'
...B-side to 'Soldier Soldier'
Bought this single when it was released, sold it somewhere down the line (very early '80s) and found (and bought) a mint copy in original pic sleeve (slightly tatty, but not bad) yesterday for £1 at a new and second hand vinyl record shop on a high-street near us...Also got Spizzoil 'Cold City' : 4 single for £1, m/ex, similar story, happy days!
Another cracker here...B-side to their 'Darts of Pleasure' debut single, with great vocal delivery, sounding like some dark-splice of Mark E. Smith and Iggy Pop..
Yes both great B-sides...I still have the 'Politics' single knocking around somewhere....'Cruel World' has all the '80s trademark sounds thrown in, with the synths, samples, slap bass and great percussion..really good musicianship, and the lovely melodic chorus, in particular, creates a not unpleasant earworm.
...And!...not heard the spacey Flock flipside before...it's pretty cool.
Nice track, Tourist, nice ch-ch-cha chak-a chak-a chak-a chak-a chaa beat ... and I like that guitar tone ... and the sync-sweep sound in it. I'm always looking for that sync-sweep anywhere/everywhere.
The name of this post makes me wanna hear Bill Nelson's 'Flipside' [1995] ....
... and Adventures In Stereo's 'Flipside' [1997] as well, actually.
Thanks for the comment Alec...and, it just so happens Bill's 'Flipside' from 'After the Satellite sings' is a favourite track from one of my favourite albums of his...I definitely think it's one of his best and remember digging the drum & bass grooves and cool trippy vibes, and written pretty much at the embryonic stage of D&B, as far as I remember..cool stuff indeed!..because of this, it kind of took some people by surprise, in a good way = as ever, you're never really quite sure exactly what's next with Bill.
Like the Adventures In Stereo track as well..cool mashed-up samples with a '60s smile.
Forgot to mention a fact about The Cribs, a band I always really liked, especially when it's just the three Jarman brothers (twins and a younger brother), a fact you probably know but, they also originate from Bill's hometown of Wakefield and, as Bill Nelson, also have their own 'Wakefield Star' in the city centre.....
They've made some great albums, 'Men's Needs, Women's Needs, Whatever', a particular personal favourite.
@Tourist been getting loads of Cribs in my YouTube feed now, Tourist. Cheers. 😎
Also ... doesn’t the Adventures in Stereo track, ‘Flipside’ sort of remind you of another one-word-title song, which happens to be a B-side, ‘Annexe’ by John Foxx? https://youtu.be/Tz89kT22jqc
