Anyone else in love with playing old 78’s? I inherited dozens from my grandfather and bought a few over the years as well, mostly jazz and blues from the 40s and 50s. I love the sound and feel of them, transports you instantly!

this 2 x disc set are from the 1940's
I have been collecting 78's for some years, this is the oldest record I have in my collection, From His Master's Voice's Gramophone & Record Catalogue, Feb - Mar 1911: "For the first time in the history of the Talking Machine industry, a genuine record has been obtained of a bird. The Nightingale in question is the property of Herr Carl Reich, of Berlin, and was taken from its nest shortly after hatching, and reared by hand."
I think my mum still has some Spike Jones and George Formby 78s knocking around at home, but nothing to play them on. There were some classic tracks like Spike's Cocktails For Two, Chloe and Holiday For Strings and George's When The Waterworks Caught Fire.
Check out Techmoan on You tube . Couple of weeks back he covered this very subject and demonstrated some of the later machines which considering they only have a little speaker system sound really good . Interesting indeed .
My dad has quite a number of 78s stashed away in his basement. Perhaps I should investigate as to the content of these bad boys!
Yes, I thought of a Dansette straight away...Had a quick look on eBay and there are some decent looking options...will have to do a little research and looking around first.
Always loved the look of a Dansette, just so quintessentially 1950's/60's design aesthetic and cool style.
Hey tourist...you can get some beautiful old Dansette players quite reasonably 😎
Great thread!...can't quite believe it's not been brought up before.
I've very recently just turned 60 and can clearly remember my mum and dad's radiogram and collection of 78's from about the mid 1960's and hearing the dulcet tones of Nat King Cole, gently drifting through the house..it's a wonderful memory.
I still have some 78's (somewhere) and will have a delve into the loft next time I'm up there...Might even get some old second hand, suitably vintage record player, to give them a spin and have the odd '78's night!' = great idea RG!....this has really piqued my interest and makes sense, as I still love other older media, such as vinyl records and cassette tapes and do have sessions with them and still love them..as you say, the history, connection, nostalgia.
...although this isn't one of the older shellac 78's, it is a 78 and I love the early coloured vinyl...The Dickies would approve😎
Not really important in the spirit if this thread, but I do believe that Beatles 78's pressed in foreign countries during the 1960's are very rare and (condition dependent) worth a lot!...so, keep your eyes peeled, just in case😉
Yes and they nearly always have the the musicians listed on the center since they were sold with plain paper sleeves
Great photo’. Yes, love them. The heft! The artwork is always cool, the graphics, typography ... ⚡️
