In early 1976 I was in my second year as an apprentice Juke box engineer at Northern music distributors in Leeds. One aspect of my job was to rebuild Juke boxes to put in the pubs all around Yorkshire. We had piles and piles of singles laying around which we used to test the boxes...which meant being exposed to a plethora of music (although usually the pop of the time) I'm not sure exactly when "Ships in the night" was released but I found it while scouring through the piles of singles ...I was immediately hooked by the guitar sound and used the single as a stereo reference for testing ....that keyboard going from left to right etc :) I was aware of Be bop deluxe from my Friday and Saturday night jaunts into Wakefield for the weekly pub crawl where I remember hearing Be bop playing at the Unity hall one Saturday night. (I was outside eating fish n chips !) So at the end of 2018 when Sunburst finish was re released I eagerly listened to the material and was transported back to my youth of Wakefield and Leeds in the 1970,s I can remember getting on the number 10 bus (Kettlethorpe) to go into Wakefield on a friday night with so much Aramis cologne on that heads turned in disbelief :) They were great times (but not the BEST times for me) so after listening to the new mix around a dozen times which was a very emotional experience...well Auditoria arrived.... I have listened to nothing else since (nothing) and while I love the heady days of Be Bop deluxe and will go back to this wonderful reissue when the mood strikes its Bills never ending stream of rhythms texture and melodies that continue to light me up ....

  • Track 1 on the rear cover reads, 'Gentle Sprits Prevail'! I take it should be 'Gentle Spirits Prevail'. If not what is Sprit? A Spirit with one 'eye'
  • Here is a flyer for my 'AUDITORIA' album which features a shot of Wakefield's 'Regal' ABC Cinema from the 1950s. I performed on that stage as a schoolboy in my band 'The Cosmonauts' and later with 'Group 66' and 'The Gibson Trio,' (when my mother and father sat in the balcony to watch me play.) Back then it looked as grand and glamorous as it does in this photo' but now it's a sad ruin and looks as if demolition is on the cards. Such is life...
