Bill - re your comments about Trump, Johnson, Farage - have you ever been tempted to write an overtly political song? Either a straight protest - eg Neil Young's "Ohio" or his "Living With War" album - or something more of a lampoon or a satire.
I'm sure you're not worried about alienating half your fanbase, because you know that most of us are on the same wavelength as you. Or do you think it would be a bridge too far?
Go on - have a think, and do it quickly, as NY did. Get angry, get in the studio, get it recorded, put it out. A day's work :)
I'm not sure that I'd make much impact as a 'protest' singer. To really be effective and have a broader reach, you need a more mainstream audience to get your message across. These are the people whose minds you really have to change to persuade them away from the all-pervasive 'populist' direction. I'd be, mostly, I suspect, simply preaching to the converted, people who already share my political and cultural leanings. An 'echo cha, mber' I think it's called.
I think many of the older generation, (and that means those of us in our 50s and onward,) are simply too stuck in our ways to change whatever attitudes we profess, whether progressive or otherwise. It's the young who need to be reached and energised. After all, they will inherit the world after we're gone and have the right to a voice to shape it.
Mad Boris, Bozo, Doris, or whatever we want to call him, with his manipulative, self-serving conivances is surely not the man to represent our future. He's merely peddling a tired old, long dead dream of the 'British Empire', a dream that appeals to Hooray-Henry, Cricket playing toffs with their fingers in their ears and their heads up their arses.
