Since one or two of us have been discussing Be Bop Deluxe during the Modern Music era, in the 'Remember your first Be-Bop gig?' thread, I thought this might be of interest.
I think Fil gives a really good appraisal of Bill's playing, technique, song composition, structure and direction etc and the band's overall dynamics...You can see he is really enjoying the performance, in particular Bill's guitar playing. To be fair, we all know how good Be Bop were and we've all seen this OGWT performance, and they absolutely nail it, as usual, 'Down On Terminal Street' is perfect and a great recording...And Fil does touch upon Bill's later/current work, which is obviously a plus....I've been checking out this guy's videos for a while on YouTube and they really are a pleasure to watch.
Every video Fil does he looks like he enjoys it. Maybe a bit too much. /orgasm face.
Had no idea he did one of Bill. Cool. I’m a subscriber to his channel but I’ve only watched about five of his clips.
@Alec
What did you think of his overview Alec?...I think he summed things up really quite nicely and he also had foresight to mention Bill's later work and indeed newer output, so that interested newcomers may get involved in that also...I looked through quite a few of the comments for this video of Fil's and there's a good percentage who have never heard of Be Bop Deluxe before, let alone Bill, but who really liked the OGWT performance..Now this has to be a good thing, as Phil has no doubt presented Be Bop and indeed Bill's work, old and new, to a potential new audience, who might just become new fans, get involved and buy Bill's albums!...and spread the word...all good stuff..😃
@Tourist Yeh all great points. Phil is where it’s at with a proper Rock convo and analysis. It’s a good service he provides. He reminds me, looks-wise, of someone I’ve seen perform live a few times and that is the terrific Bobbie Gillespie (Primal Scream). The grinning and the grooving are as spot-on as his analysis. He zeroes in on what’s unique, surprising and magical. I had to laugh when he said the word “vibrato,” pronouncing it as it’s spelled, when describing the tools Bill uses. As a USA person I, of course, pronounce that word more like “VA BRA DO” 😁 ... Can’t help noticing Phil speaks basically as though he’s a “Bill insider” here, a Nelsonian or as close as possible to that, what with the criticism over monies not paid properly with that first round of Be Bop Deluxe reissues and The Gentlemen Rocketeers performance and DVD. Maybe he’s on the forum? If you are, Phil, you are great. 👍 😎
Oh, I nearly forgot Alec, I thought that too!...Fil does look rather like Bobbie Gillespie..but maybe the scrubbed-up, squeaky clean, shiny version (no disrespect Bobbie, if you happen to be reading)..😜😉
