Dad was in Europe from then to the end of the war. A year after the war, he went back to Germany to assist in the Marshall Plan. He stayed there to oversee the rebuilding of German hospitals for five years.
A remarkable time that bonded the consciousness of nations and generations. "A time that tried the souls of men" - Peter, Paul and Mary.
No matter what station you now inhabit, that time loomed the patterns that compose our current realities.
They gave us the opportunity to decide how humanity (and each individual) would proceed.
I thank them for that opportunity.
Many of the children of these veterans reminded us of our duty to be ever vigilant, lest we forfeit the freedoms their parents fought for. They also showed us the prices that are paid for standing up for those freedoms.
My Dad, second from left, in Normandy. Sometime in late June 1944. He participated in the D-Day operation. As a doctor, he worked in field hospitals. That's one you can see behind him.
What a fabulous picture wadcorp, thank you !!! My father was a member of the Yugoslav Partisans and when we were visiting there in the 70's, he took me to a city where he was hiding in a crumbled building as the SS were marching right in front of that crumbled building. the building was still in the same shape in 1973. Took most of Europe til the mid 1980's to rebuild. What horrifying but gallant stories he would tell me. It was amazing he survived.

All in all examples to emulate.
Salute to all the veterans and volunteers!
I have my history class watching the ceremony from earlier today. Very moving and well done.
