I talked to Orphan of Babylon about my latest piece Shine, and it reminded him of Steve Reich's music in part. He was kind to give me some links to Reich's music. Sure enough, it inspired me to write, but NOT really along the lines of Reich. Reich has a piece about trains and so does Jean Michel-Jarre and what happened, almost unconsciously, I started to write more like Jarre than anyone else. So this piece was inspired by Jarre. To my mind, Jarre has a European sensibility and likes those catchy café melodies that you might hear some street accordionist play in Paris. I know so little about Jarre, but he seems fortunate to have come from a musical family where his dad was a score writer for movies. He has what it takes: a musical family with connections, good looks, and a big one-hit album (Oxygen) that started his career off. I would say he is talented, but there is a lot of music that I really don't relate to. In that way, he reminds me of Blue Oyster Cult in which people remember their hits.
This is a short piece to get my appetite wetted. I'm planning to write more in the vein of Jarre maybe even do Oxygen 4 as an intro to something. Sorry, Orphan, I will dive into Reich's style, perhaps a bit later.
