I have a question about Noise Candy. Did Bill at one point say that he felt the songs were too pop for the releases from which they came?

Return To Jazz Of Lights

Today, 30th April 2026, marks International Jazz Day. What better way to celebrate than by giving Billโ€™s Return to Jazz of Lightsย a spin?

It may not be a โ€œpureโ€ jazz album as such, but Billโ€™s guitar work is always infused with a distinct jazz sensibility, and itโ€™s very much present here.

Itโ€™s also exactly twenty years and one week since the passing of his brother, Ian. That makes the closing track, All These Days Are Gone (For Ian), especially poignant, a beautiful tribute that resonates all the more today, as we remember Ian along with the music.

From the Holyground recording and Smile Records release of Northern Dreamย in the early โ€™70s (1970, I think), to a vast and ever-evolving body of work that continues to grow, Bill Nelsonย has followed his own musical direction. Whether through the art-rock precision of Be-Bop Deluxeย or the atmospheric, exploratory textures of Red Noiseย and far beyond,โ€ฆ

After the Satellite sings

Released 30 years ago today...

A real tour-de-force, a poetic powerhouse of an album, with some of my favourite BN compositions, lyrics and guitar-work.

I was fortunate enough to attend one of Bill's ATSS promotional appearances - at Virgin Megastore in Nottingham - the first time I had seen him play since the Sunburst Finish (?) tour.

"I'm deeply dazzled" - still, after all these years....

Thanks for all the music Bill, past, present .... and future.

Due to various life changes, after the release of Vistamix in 1984, I completely lost track of Bill's music, as well as much of the music scene in general. I had kept up with Bill/Be Bop until then. So, I was thrilled, when in 1996, I found a copy of After The Satellite Sings. Soon after, I found Practically Wired and Blues Moons And Laughing Guitars. Then, in 1998 with the release of Atom Shop, I found out about the website Permanent Flame, today Dreamsville. I would also visit the UK website, which I cannot remember the name of at this moment. Anyway, I found out about all the Bill Nelson music I had missed out on for over twelve years, and started playing catch-up. Due to Bill's prolific output, I was also playing keep-up, and I've done pretty well at it.

It's hard to believe it's been thirty years ago. Still loving After The Satellite Sings, as well as his other music, after all these years.๐Ÿ˜Ž
