These photos were shot at Winterland Gardens in SF when I was 17 years old in 1976. At the time, Winterland was the
primer venue for concerts. Bands like the Grateful Dead, Queen, The Who, Black Sabbath, Jefferson Starship, The Sex Pistols etc. found their way
to this historical venue that made Bill Graham famous.
I waited in line (on queue) for several hours prior to the doors opening so I could be up front at the
5' high stage. These were the first photos I have ever taken. Be Bop played Winterland on two tours. This is from the first tour. They
opened the show for Slade and Blue Oyster Cult...I think. Another time they opened for Tom Petty.
While not up to my current standards, I was so impressed by these photos that I went on to earn a photo degree from San Francisco State University. Since, I have been an award
winning photographer with photos in a museum in China and in the permanent collection at the Library of Congress in the US and have been published worldwide. Bill
Nelson inspired me in many more ways.
For the photo enthusiast. These photos were shot on Kodachrome 64 through a Minolta X-7 with a 50mm 1.2 lens. Shutter speed was 1/60 and aperture was 1.2.
