Hi,

We've been fortunate enough to buy a big big house in the style of the "Adams Family" and I'm planning on building a recording studio in the basement.

Does anyone have any pointers/suggestions as tp the best way to go about this regarding soundproofing et al?

The basement has previously been used as a "party room" (don't ask!) and has a convenient "bar area" which I hope will convert to a mising desk console room.

As is synonymous with basements, there is some risk of damp penetration but we have this in hand.

Any help much appreciated.

Never built a studio myself, could never save up enough egg boxes and my wife says the duvet looks untidy on the wall.

As a starter for ten, I'd try the rockwool website at http://www.rockwool.co.uk ...goto acoustic or Rockwool Soundpro. There's loads of technical stuff about setting up the right environment, according to the type of building you have.

I've always found the punters on the SOS forum helpful, too...not forgetting the info on the SOS website itself.

I'd be interested to know how this project progresses. Keep posting!

My wife is an architect so we are hoping to get it "just right" as we may let it out in the future.

All you could ever need is on here. Ethan is a great guy who will give you loads of advice.

I built ( I use the word loosely) some bass traps out of very thick fibreglass and it cost me under 100 quid - basically the stuff is mostly in its packages in the four corners of the garage. You wonot believe what a difference it makes, my mixes started translating pretty well eslewhere after this treatment, which was really exciting, as be4 I would spend days on a mix and it would sound shite everywhere else....Having good monitors helps too. Now the only excuse is in the writing and playing dept

Just as an afterthought given the wealth of experience you guys have, what sort of rate would you expect to pay for an 8 track recording studio?

It varies enormously down here (i.e. from £22 - £150per hour!).
