And other oddities from our youth. What were you listening to when you were young and acquiring a taste for rock and pop music? When I was a young un, rock was just beginning to pull away from the mainstream and was starting to upset the establishment, just as Elvis had done singing his ‘negro music’ ten years before. But as with many wee bairns, anything the establishment was against, I just had to look into. So lets hear your fond memories and the soundtrack which helped to get you through those awkward years.

I’ll start out with an example of a weirdo who upset parents with his hippy appearance. And to be honest, he even freaked me out a bit. Because even back then I knew that the lyrics to this song was the result of way too much hash and acid. But just now I realised that he could have passed for Lemmy’s father, he more or less invented glam rock with this tune. Close you eyes, give it some new lyrics about foxy girls, and you have a serious glam anthem.

Dont know what to say Asterisk...Very weird...but yes, he got chicks in background, anyway.

A classic tune in the best sense of the word...wouldn't change a thing.

This is one of the tunes that I played a bazillion times...but never sprang for an LP. :(

That is a good one. But do you really think he was smokin' at the time, Aster?

Having grown up with several older brothers I was esposed to the whole spectrum of pop and rock. From The Beach Boys, Tom Jones, and The Beatles all the way to Steppenwolf and Santana and everything in between, including Emerson, Lake and Palmer, King Crimson, YES and Genesis.

I still remember the first time I saw the video of Bohemian Rhapsody. I remember thinking this is mine. While kids my age were listening to Styx, Kiss and Foghat, I was listening to prog, Steely Dan, Jean Luc-Ponty, and The Talking Heads. And still do.

Back when it was happening, it was more or less all good. You either liked something or not. It took a while and a thing called punk to begin to see it all much more closely. Some of the arguments held up and some were just the typical snobbish elitism, introducing us to the age of micro-managing genres. After that, there was always that burning in the back of one’s head that wondered, is this cool or not? Weird when examined, but quite typical of human nature. Hence we all have a special place for what is commonly referred to as ‘guilty pleasures’.
