Cool JE. I guess i was thinking Quadraphonic, then found those neat pics from Quad speakers.

I don't own a 5.1 system.

I am waiting for 'Sensurround' to come to the market.

WT,

You can't get hold of this kit now, not just the speaker but the Amp & Tuner which the guy has his arm on,

It goes straight out to Japan, where vintage Quad kit is the holy grail for Japanese Hi-Fi enthusiasts, they will pay top dollar.

I'm a HUGE "Surround" fan.
I have approximately 300 titles in DVD-Audio(My favorite medium-King Crimson has released a lot of their catalog in this format and will continue to do so ),SACD (my least favorite medium), DVD-Video (Lossy DTS 96/24 like the recent ELO 1st LP and Gentle Giant by ...should I mention the company???? EMI!!!)...
and that's not counting the "SQ"encoded Columbia/CBS 1970's LPs.

I have mentioned this in this Forum before since Bill's music would lend itself PERFECTLY to Surround mixes.

I am a professional recording engineer (graduated from Berklee) and have worked in several studios (started when it was still in the 2" 24 track tape stage), and now I make music with my Lovely wife-recorded in High resolution,
mixed in Stereo AND Surround, since we have a working setup.

I'd be willing to mix ANY of Bill's CDs to Surround (for free!! or whatever Bill thinks is right, I know there isn't a lot of money, but just doing those mixes and being credited for them would be enough) and have professional contacts with cream of the crop mastering and authoring (KCrimson, Porcupine Tree, etc) technicians- I could also do the authoring and mastering, just in case....

Best proposition would be a "compilation of the best" of his solo work, and this way, for the fans who DON'T have a Surround setup, could also enjoy a Hi Res 96/24 stereo PCM mix, which would be also included in the disc.

A lot of people have "Surround" setups, and , even with a "Home Theater in a Box" equipment, can be thoroughly enjoyable...

If ever any Disc's like this do appear, I'd be in like a shot!

Bill Nelson in 5.1 is a dream project, I realise Mr N has many irons in the fire right now & Its not a priority but this is a tantalising prospect for many of us,

I also think It would appeal to music fans outside of Bill's regular fan base as people will buy 5.1 discs because of the quality, especially Hi-Fi afficanadoes.

:)

I love the fact she's hot enough for shorts but cold enough for a nice cardy. Must be drafty in her house.

I've become a fan of surround recordings lately, and not just because Ringo likes them, although that's swell. Beyond the swirly effects, having more than two channels allows the music to breathe a little more. Especially on complex recordings, the individual instruments come through a lot more clearly. I'd say that the most talented at this art form have created recordings that range from wonderfully warm and realistic (Mark Knopfler's Shangri La and America's Homecoming) to truly intoxicating (Roxy Music's Avalon, Rush's Moving Pictures, and pretty much anything by Porcupine Tree or Talking Heads).

To me, these are albums that you can live in and be transported by, and my system isn't wildly expensive. Fairy Godmother, if you're out there, I'd like to hear Be Bop Deluxe's Sunburst Finish or maybe Channel Light Vessel's Excellent Spirits in surround. :D

(I might even be willing to ask my Fairy Godfather, although his price would be high indeed!)

Maybe the derail into vintage cheesecake is symptomatic of why multichannel is kind of a "cult" format. Not a lot of folks even know about it. Still, new releases continue to trickle out, including some re-releases of quadraphonic albums from the '70's.

With the multichannel madness, comes the opportunity for producers to go back to the master multi-track tapes. I think that allows some great discoveries, at least for those who aren't too tied to the original mixes. I also notice that, despite noise reduction and remixing, the basic sound of the original session is usually still there, much like an expert restorer cleaning a painting. A good example is Steven Wilson and Robert Fripp's re-do of In the Court of the Crimson King, where they were able to find the original Mellotron recordings (before they were bounced from several individual tracks to a single track on a studio 4-track machine, to make room for other elements) and restore them to their former glory.
