But I'm really impressed with what Bill does with it 8)

He has a particularly smooth melodic touch which flows nicely and in no way sounds just like a trick. I'm not convinced that even Jimi mastered it in the way Bill has 8)

Currently enjoying All The World Flies Kites Tonight.

Now where have I heard that particular Golden Melody before :?:

8)

Playing 'Mazda Kaleidoscope' now.

Even back in 1970, the track 'Northern Dreamer (1957)' backwards guitar can be heard shimmering/swimming/leaping/flying upwards towards paradise.

In my opinion, we have to give a nod influence/thanks (even if subliminally) to Jean Cocteau and all that backward filming he did in Orphee and Testament d'Orphee. Bill DID make the practice of backwards guitar "phoenixology :) " playing his own!
View the films, you'll know to what I make reference.

Good points, Serge.

Have always thought that the track 'Life In Reverse' , from 'Luminous', especially, produces -- in condensed form -- the same effect upon the consciousness as watching a Jean Cocteau film does.

The effect, as used at the beginning of The Gold At The End Of My Rainbow is a particular favourite 8)

And it was 'The Beatles' use of reversed guitar on 'I'm Only Sleeping' plus the backwards guitar tapes on the first Jimi Hendrix album, (check out the title track, 'Are You Experienced,') that opened the door for me. Actually, I think Jimi got turned onto that stuff by the Beatles use of the technique on the aforementioned track and also on songs such as 'Tomorrow Never Knows,' and 'Strawberry Fields Forever.' Jimi was a big Beatles fan.

Your very own Delia Derbyshire used this technique on the 'Dr. Who Theme' back in 1963.

Mine too felix 1-beautiful - in fact Modern Music is my favourite Be Bop album - I've always seen it as a concept album full of many rich layers, twists and turns and real musical cohesion.I remember some not really likeing it at the time and sadly seeing copies for sale in second -hand record shops before the end of 1976 - I prefer it to Sunburst Finish which I have to say is my least favourite one (oh!how to lose friends and alienate people - I like SF - just not as much as the others, that's all)

Also, let's not forget the cover - only one with the band on the front and if I may say a great photo which compliments the music really well - I can't recall who did the photography - Mick Rock? Sheila Rock?Anton Corbijn? Man Ray? Professor Foxtalbot?
