saw a preview of this last night, good stuff though GC seems to not so
much act as just be in movies these days. Even at 2 hours and with not
a lot going on as well as mainly being about someone in a coma it still kept
Mrs HG and I entertained but it seems you don't have to do all that much
to win an Oscar if GC is up for best actor...

We saw this last Saturday. I was feeling tired on the way to the theatre and thought " I might nod off if this is boring". Not possible. I was gripped. 8/10. In a shell, while Clooney's "wife" is in a coma he discovers she was having an affair. The plot takes many twists from there. Very touching movie. Perhaps even a good cry. Oscar for GC? Maybe. Beau Bridges has a small part.

I watched 'Drive' starring Ryan Gosling last night.

An excellent modern film with brilliant use of both music and chiaroscuro.

I am not going to say it is one of the great movies of all time but it is enjoyable and worthy of a viewing if you enjoy a bit of stylish escapism. There is strong violence in one or two scenes but it serves an important part of the story.

Think 1980's cool in a more contemporary setting

Sounds good, donger.

I never wanted to like his movies because I didn't like it whenever I was forced into watching the television series he starred in, called 'E.R.', but everything, in the movie realm that I've seen with him in, I've liked.

I think its probably wrong to say I enjoyed this but its certainly
watchable and quite powerful. Elizabeth Olsen looks like a cross
between Melissa George and Maggie Gyllenhaal and that was no bad thing,
she's already made a movie thats eclipsed the entire career of her sisters.
good ending too - 8/10

Lars Von Trier's Melancholia

Certainly not as controversial as his previous effort Antichrist and not quite as surreal but as always, he has his moments.

The planet Melancholia is making it's way towards impact with Earth whilst chronically depressed Kirsten Dunst is embarking on a short lived marriage to Eric The Vampire from True Blood.

The film is beautifully shot but the wedding scene goes on perhaps longer than necessary. I am not quite sure of the reasoning, perhaps a metaphor for how petty and selfish our relationships can be at the best of times :?

I enjoyed the film nonetheless and as for the end..........

A strong cast including Charlotte Gainsbourg, Keifer Sutherland and featuring John Hurt and Charlotte Rampling as the hilariously/tragically dysfunctional parents of the bride.

With good performances all round, I tentatively recommend this one.

Just remember the beauty is in the art

Enjoyed Melancholia, Felix.

I only recently saw Paris, Je T'Aime (Paris, I Love You) (2007) and I really enjoyed some of it. Irrésistible.

It gets so very headache-inducing in its pursuit of quirky that it gets very cutesy, like many modern French films do, of a certain kind. That would be a criticism.

Wikipedia throw a little light on this project and it looks like it could be shaping into something quite special.

I don't think that the movies that are coming out today are going to be of any match against those released some time ago. It seems that movies are now bunking on mediocrity which could work in two ways. It could attract the market to sway toward it and also be such a flop. And all the more have I heard of big budget movies to be flops, which is quite disappointing, actually.
