had the opportunity to listen to both today in the car .....1st impresssions......Mr mercury/superb playing, love the bluesy tinged stuff But......not enough variation in tone, I was waiting for some 'light & shade'....because when I played Fancy planets it put it into a stark comparison ( they should have been released several months apart!)......I was more than pleased with the guitar histrionics on display....but it was subtle (a master at work) I reckon in a better time/better circs this would be a major label seller.

I've had time to listen to these CD's now, and make an informed 'judgement' on them. Well, all I can say, is that they have quickly become two of my all time favourite CD's / Albums ? by Bill. Adequate adjectives haven't been coined yet.
Having played 'Fancy Planets' several times, I've realised how perfectly the songs are sequenced against each other in the album as a whole. Not always an easy thing to get right. I'm sure that this will become regarded as a 'Classic' Bill Nelson album.
"Here comes Mr.Mercury" is chock full of fabulous guitar tones and perfectly restrained, but spectacular jazzy playing. A very confident album that also hangs together as a whole 'concept'. Science fiction as illustrated by Frank Hampson. This is an instrumental album that I know I will play for years to come, long after all the 'flashy' albums by other guitar heroes have been forgotten. Dare I say; just like people of my generation 'discovering' Les Paul's "How High the moon" . . . kids may also 'discover' this album by Bill Nelson and be knocked sideways in a similar way.

so I suppose you've already guessed that I like them both a lot . . .

Thankyou very much for replying to my post Bill. Seeing as I've spent the last few days listening to, "The Dream Transmission Pavilion", I may forced now to increase my favourites list by one. The new CD is so good. I'm especially liking the 'slide' guitar elements that are creeping into it too. Prairie Hula . Once more around the moon(monitor mix) and I the Captain are stand out tracks, but hey, I just love them all. As a guitarist, I appreciate all the clever little nuances and themes within the tunes. Once again, this really hangs together as a whole album and doesn't seem like a 'collection' of random tracks.
The artwork too is spectacular. It seems to be of an alternative world, as in the Philip Pulman books (Golden Compass etc.) Well done Dave Graham.
By the way, I caught my train with only 2 minutes to spare, phew !
