So far everyone mentioned has willingly become Americans. Take from that what you will.

According to Wikipedia:

The name Canada comes from the St. Lawrence Iroquoian word kanata, meaning "village" or "settlement".[10] In 1535, indigenous inhabitants of the present-day Quebec City region used the word to direct French explorer Jacques Cartier to the village of Stadacona.[11] Cartier later used the word Canada to refer not only to that particular village, but the entire area subject to Donnacona (the chief at Stadacona); by 1545, European books and maps had begun referring to this region as Canada.

Let us not forget that Upper Canada, the area today emcompassing Ontario was settled largely by American Loyalists in the years between the Revolution and the War of 1812.

I am reminded of an old joke:

A family of Americans moved to Quebec because they hoped for a combination of American "know-how", French Culture and Britsh Government and left after realizing that what they got was British "know-how", American Culture and French Government.

Now before anyone gets all bent out of shape, let me remind you that I heard this joke in the 70's and the words "British Leyland" and "Lucas Electrics" should stop you in your tracks.
