Due to ignorance of their greatness until it was too late, I never saw Cardiacs live, but tonight I got the next best thing. The headline act at the Tim Smith Benefit gig at The Windmill, Brixton, was a one-off group of ex-Cardiacs and musician lovers of the band. Performing under the name Mr Smith and the Big Ships, they played a wonderful set of eighties Cardiacs classics including: To Many Irons In The Fire, Arnald, Jibber And Twitch, To Get Off And Things, Is This The Life and The Duck And Roger The Horse (these last two a second time as an encore). I've never seen this little venue packed with so much joyous abandon. Middle aged men briefly rediscovering their youth bouncing up and down to the music and hugging each other (in a manly way, of course!). One of those nights that live with you for years. I was there and I've got the t-shirt to prove it!
Tim, you are loved.
