I had Quadrophenia when I was a teenager but I didn't understand what it was about. Tommy was a complex as I could manage back then :|

I give up. Try starting it with 'knock knock' first.

According to Pete:

I never understood it either, Dar. Maybe our friends over the pond can help us out.

On a related note, I just picked up the Deluxe Edition of Quadrophenia from my local library. I was totally blown away by Pete Townshend's demos for this album; he had most of the details worked out before the band recorded these songs. Although I must add that Keith Moon's explosive drum parts added A LOT to most of the album.

Tom, I agree. Most of Townshend's demos were fairly complete. In between Who performances he was more apt than anything to be incommunicado with others whilst wrapping himself into making demos in the comfort of his own flat. And these have been bootlegged since day one. Many are as good, if not better, than the official versions (personally, in many ways I prefer Pete's voice over Roger's) but as you rightly mention, the glaringly obvious ommission is Moon. Perhaps he was nearly as important as Townshend in making up The Who's sound. I think so anyway.

And you're welcome for the links though they are long and tend to go in all sorts of directions at times, it's clear that for Pete, the essence of Mod was and is very philsophically important to him.

I was a mod in the earlier part of the 'sixties...but liked '50s rock n' roll too. I never understood the rivalry/violence between the two tribes but had to run the gauntlet of rockers waiting outside Wakefield's 'Locarno' dance hall when leaving the place after a night of dancing to records by Junior Walker And The All Stars, Joe Tex, Arthur Connely, Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, Sam n' Dave etc. Good music is good music, tribalism is dumb.

The thing is, it was nowhere that simple. The fighting was the result of over-hyped press coverage. Like with any youth movement, the establishment can become very worried and tends to over-react. We saw the same thing happen with punk. Although punk was not a youth movement per se, it did scare the bejaysis out of the powers that be. And so frightened other 'good' people as well.

Violence enters these situations by design, never by accident. When certain ideas are publicly put forward by so-called experts, it results in an intentional call to arms of opposing forces. In other words, those who have access to stirring the pot will always use that advantage to it's fullest to insure others will do their dirty work. The best way to attempt to stop anything is to give the impression that the common man will just not endure whatever it is which offends their masters. The proverbial 'self-fulfilling prophesy', if you like.

Mods were essentially about style. In clothing, in music, and definitely astethics. The scooter became the choice of Mods because of it's design aesthetic was considered exotic (Italian). And that it was easy to drive, easy to park, easy to maintenance and incredibly efficient. Rocker's preferred large, British-made bikes which the general public were also encouraged to see as intimidating. The strangest thing is, generally most Mods and Rockers were usually right-leaning, but for entirely different reasons. But that is a whole other major discourse.

The thing is scooters were accessories for Mods and so really were not required whereas with Rockers, their bikes were essentially their centre. The one thing that represented who they were. It is a very detailed story to try and explain here as more pages have been written about Mods than any other youth group in history.

But initially, Mods and Rockers had little to no contact with each other as they were socially diametrically opposed.

I couldn't get tinypic to work today so I will do my best to write my tongue-in-cheek simplistic take on it.......

Ted Nugent - Rocker

Bill Nelson - Mod

Now, this would make a lot more sense and convey so much more with the pictures I had intended posting of the two, but if you take these guys as prime examples of each ideal and aesthetic and ponder how they have individually developed over the years, you should come within touching distance of the answer

Despite a bit of bad-boy posturing by the rockers in Wakefield, and some sneering from a couple of mods in return, I never experienced any real violence when I was a mod. It was all a bit silly, especially as I liked the big bikes as much as the cool scooters...and some rockers used to turn up to my mod band's gigs and enjoy the freak-beat stuff we used to play. But we threw in some Eddie Cochran and Buddy Holly stuff too.

As far as I was concerned, it was all about good music...the fashion thing tended, for me at that time, to lean towards the stylish mod suits and hipsters, floral ties, op-art belts and two-tone shoes...the rocker's uniform of fringed leather jackets was a bit too 'old' for me, I suppose. But that didn't stop me enjoying rockers' music as much as mod stuff.

The real fights and violence seemed to be down south, particularly on weekends in Brighton. Nowadays, it's just one big mash-up...all styles mixed and matched and re-invented. In the post-modern world, the truly hip and liberated grab it all and enjoy it without recourse to tribal stereotypes.
