From the Guardian Website

"If there is one issue of contention among rock aficionados, it's guitar solos. The most frenzied fretboard moments have often been compiled and ranked, from Led Zeppelin's Stairway to Heaven to Muse's Stockholm Syndrome. But what do you think is the greatest solo of all? "

I guess the most obvious Bill Nelson candidate for this, all things considered, would probably have to be Adventures In A Yorkshire landscape ('Live In The Air Age' version).

It may be obvious, but 'Crying To The Sky' is just guitar-playing genius

Yes! Fair play Freddie, this would be an equal contender

Agreed. But surely there are many, many other examples where the solo was not the ‘feature’ of the track. Some of his shorter solos are perfecto, no?

Of course, it goes without saying. But these polls tend to be awfully predictable and narrow minded

I would gently disagree with that. AIAYL is nice, but I think the solo in Banal is brilliant. A perfect pop song with a perfect solo, perfectly timed.

For non Bill Nelson material, it would have to be Machine Gun or certain versions of Hear My Train a Comin' by Hendrix.

Banal is indeed perfect..and and another genius solo. Short and sweet, like some of my other faves like 'Kid' by The Pretenders, 'Forest Fire' by Lloyd Cole and 'Charlotte Anne' by Copey.

Hey 'Pod, no need to be gentle about it

I was merely speculating on which of Bill's more famous solos might even be considered for a poll such as this.....

Pay no attention, Dave. He's only been listening to Bill's music for 3 weeks. He's probably never heard the solo on AIAYL anyway
